USA ultimate scenario by Filip Tailor (v1.8 out now)

Hey guys, I´m a beginner here, although I´m an old fan of TTD and especially OTTD. This forum has been a source to many many grfs I found. So here is my "thank you". I´m working on an ultimate US scenario. Because those I have found are not sufficient I think (sorry, authors:-). This is based on a heightmap and sources below. It´ de facto complete.

Newest version 1.8:

What´s new from 1.7
  • Corrections and improvements according to the great suggestions of mr.trainmaster (see the post below)
Terrain, waters:
  • You can find there all major rivers and lakes (thanks to http://www.worldatlas.com/webimage/coun ... layout.htm and wikipedia and other sources). And also the mountains are as much precise as the heightmap was.
  • Significant places of USA (Death Valley, Area 51, Colorado Canyon etc. See the sign list!
  • Updated: added Platte River and some rocks (from v1.4)
Towns and cities
  • The cities have the state abbreviations and each capital is noted there.
  • 25 biggest cities are sorted according to the real amount of population (sources: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Un ... population and: http://www.city-data.com/top1.html). The rest of the cities is not proporcional. Please take into consideration that the differencies in cities´ populations are sometimes very tiny. Therefore, there will always be some disproportion, but I did it as real as possible.
  • More than 400 towns and cities.
Industry
  • The industry has been done mainly thanks to this VERY GOOD resource: http://www.mbendi.com/land/am/us/p0005.htm
  • Coal mines according to this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coal_in_the_United_States
  • Iron ore mines: according to the first resource, the main producers are states of Michigan, Missouri and Minnesotta
  • Wood: logically, that was mainly a matter of Canada and was done more or less randomly within Canada
  • Farming: http://209.85.129.132/search?q=cache:CR ... clnk&gl=cz
  • Oil: Texas and Alaska, of course... Again, thanks to the first resource.
  • Note: I was considering ECS vectors, but it´s controversial for me, so I chose just to add some paper industries etc (see the grfs list below). Otherwise it´s more or less default.
  • Industry in Mexico according to this source: http://www.nationsencyclopedia.com/Amer ... USTRY.html
  • And one more note: mines´ and farms´ production is increased by me because I want it to stay there for a while. The production is sometimes doubled, sometimes tripled. If you mind, you can decrase it in scenario editor.
Brief characteristics:
  • based on heightmap
  • Size: 2048 x 2048
  • Compatibility: OpenTTD 0.7.0
Features:
  • USA (complete)
  • Mesoamerica (complete, including the island states, Cuba etc.)
  • Piece of South America (Venezuela, ending with Orinoco River)
  • Piece South of Canada and the tail of Alaska
Other sources of information: To be done:
  • Slight corrections (according to your suggestions!)
  • Maybe I will add some towns, or correct some towns´ or rivers´ positions (If you have any suggestions, come on!)
  • Adidtion of more significant places? Does anybody know where the Mount Rushmore is? :D
  • More rivers?
  • Correction of position of Phoenix and the surrounding cities
  • Otherwise it´s complete!
Here´s the list of (yet) used grfs (the order matters!):
  • Michael Blunck´s rivers
  • newterrain.grf (don´t know where I got it from :D sorry)
  • New watter by Leppka
  • SAC´s stolen trees
  • Total Town Replacement Set v 3.02a (parameters 1 0 0)
  • North American City Set v 0.1c
  • Mc Donald´s by Michael24 and PaulC
  • North American Road Set v0.1 (parameters 0 0 2)
  • North American Renewal Set by George
  • Combined airport set v 0.5 (parameters 3 4 1 4 3
  • Modern Tramset r3
  • Dutch Catenary by Purno
  • German Road vehicle set v 0.11b
  • Canadian Stations set v 0.3d
  • US stations set v 0.86
  • Industrial stations renewal 0.8.0
  • Metro Track Set
  • NH train depot
  • Aviators Aircraft
  • Newships
  • Transrapid Track set BETA 1.1
  • Dutch station set
  • New stations
  • City stations
  • Rural stations
  • Suburban stations
  • Modern suburban stations
  • Platforms
  • 2cc set BETA 2.01
  • Lumber Mill 1.0
  • Paper on temperate
  • New Factory for TTD
  • Oil-fired powerstation
  • No fences
  • Generic Buffers
  • Of course, it´s up to you, how it will be. For example I like transrapid, which is incompatible with any bridges set, so if you prefer new bridges before the transrapid track, it´s up to you. Someone might suggest there´s too many grfs.. You can take away some, but let there the industries, because otherwise you might get some problems
  • Some parameters are pre-set by me and tested. It should all work fine.
Recommendation:
  • I strongly recommend you to use the grfs mentioned above, because the parameters are pre-set by me and everything works perfectly. Even the total town replacement functions together with NA city set and with US road set and new bridges!
  • I humbly recommend to use the setting "towns CANNOT build roads" because soon the cities may become very large and that might cause some disproportions in cities´ population.
Aaaaand finally:
Scenario available here: http://www.filiptailor.wz.cz/USA%20final.scn
Used grfs´ pack: http://www.filiptailor.wz.cz/pack.zip
I hope it´s ok that I offer those grfs. If it´s not, I will draw it down.

ENJOY!

Filip Tailor

PS: be careful when considering the transport between Cuba and USA :-D In reality, there is none...

CANT WAIT!
I'll add some cities myself, and by the way; Could you upload a final version without any industries? (When it's done of course.)

Edit: Uh.. oh.. USA is bigger than I thought. I will use random cities now, and the final scenario later. :)

Edit2: It doesn't load in OpenTTD here. Using 0.7.0 in Win7. Well.. It loads in scenario editor, but not in "Load Scenario".

OK, I will do it. ;-)

In progress:
- cities, including the state abbreviations (and sorted according to the real population)
- more signs of significant places
- fine corrections of some waters
- rocks and lighthouses

May I suggest you use TTRS 3? This looks really great so far! :P

I tried TTRS (thanks for the suggestion!) and it works perfectly even together with new bridges grf, NA roads set and North American City set, so in the next version will require that. Parameters will be pre-set.

With all due respect, that is WAY too many grfs. Many of them are not necessary for the scenario. For example, the station grfs and vehicle grfs. Its always best to keep the required grfs down to a minimum otherwise its just a pain in the neck.

Yes, I admit it´s pretty high number, but I saw scenarios with much more grfs used. I think it´s no problem to remove some. Moreover, I put there the used grfs pack, so it´s just a matter of a few minutes to remove what you consider useless. For instance, those stations, which you mentioned, are very useful, IMO. There are US and Canadian stations, which is exactly the case. But, OK, I can do a version with just necesary grfs, that´s not a problem either.

I suggest making one completly out of GRF's with all defaults
and one for ECS enabled (but require recreating industries)

version 1.6 got industrial stations but there are not necesarry

Yes, thanks, corrected.

About that non-grf version: I must admit I´m not a big fan of that. If you don´t like the new graphics, OK, remove it by yourself, but this is my concept, take it, or not. I just hate those squares of blue, which means river, in fact. Without MB´s rivers, I wouldn´t have even started this scenario. Once you download it, you can do with it anything you like, even you can remove all the grfs. That´s exclusively up to you.

What is a different issue is the version with ECS, which requires recreating industries. In fact, orginally I wanted to do it, but later I found some features of ECS vectors that I strongly disliked, so I decided not to add them. But for those who favour the ECS vectors, I am keen on doing it. Keep an eye on the thread! :-)

i am not fan of non-grf one either but this one allows other people to adjust what graphics they want in the game

in my opinion only impact between non-grf and grf one would be industry (that's why ECS one), the other grf files could be added at the start of the game
