NewShips - no water transport

I'm not sure if this is the correct place for this, but it seems the most appropriate.
I'm using the NewShips GRF, and have found that none of them are capable of transporting water. Is there a simple way I can change this? At the moment, the only method I can see is to deactivate the GRF, build a default water carrying ship, and then reactivate the GRF, and I have to do this any time I want to build a new one.

It is an issue with the NewShips GRF. I think your best bet is to try and convince the author to change it.

The most appropriate place would have been
this one.
I'm using the NewShips GRF, and have found that none of them are capable of transporting water.
Well, yes. At least the tankers don´t transport "water". The Austin&Pickersgill however should transport "all cargo except passengers and mail". Does it transport water?
The one and only reason why there´s no tanker transporting "water" is that this seemed to be quite unrealistic and useless at the time when NewShips got designed. Water does only exist in sub-tropical climate and is found inland, usually not at coasts. In addition, there had been a discussion about transporting water by ship somewhere on this forums, and AFAIR, I´ve been the only one who found it realistic, because there IS water transport by ship IRL.

I doubt that.

Does anyone see the irony in transporting water by water?

If you look at it that way yes. But when you consider that you are transporting fresh drinking water over undrinkable salt water, it's not so ironic.

technically, oil tankers get filled with salt water on their journey back, because they would lose stability if they went actually empty

I didn't know that.
Makes sense though.

Or does anyone see the irony in transporting rails by rail?
