Nuneaton

This may seem like a bit of a silly question but why are Virgin Trains not stopping at Nuneaton anymore?

I was hoping to go back that way in January and shave an hour off my journey time..unfortunately it seems not. I can save about half hour by changing at Nuneaton and Stafford but even so..

Under the new WCML timetable they have dropped a lot of smaller stations to fit in more trains to Manc and Brum. One step forward, two stops back.

Indeed, makes your journey from Liverpool to Peterborough slightly slower. Best bet is LM to Nuneaton or just cram in the EMT direct train to Norwich.

With the completion of the West Coast Main Line upgrade, there is now an hourly stopping train (a 350/1) from London - Northampton - Rugby - Nuneaton - Lichfield - Stafford - Stoke - Crewe. This ensures that all of the Trent Valley stations now have a regular service to London, and enables the Virgin trains to run even faster.

The Trent Valley stations still receive rush-hour Virgin Trains services. Will be back in 1 min when I check which ones they are. Otherwise it's worth changing like Ammecher said at Stafford for the LM service to Nuneaton.

Liverpool-Leeds on a TPEx then Leeds-P'boro on NXEC?

On Saturdays and Sundays there's three morning trains ex-Liverpool which call at Nuneaton. On Sunday there's a parliamentary evening train as well. No services from Liverpool call at Nuneaton except for a parliamentary train at the end of the day, which is probably no use since it's too late.

Going from Nuneaton to Liverpool, there's a few evening services on Monday - Saturday. On Sunday there's also a few morning services.

Here's the timetable: http://www.virgintrains.co.uk/img/timet ... ains_C.pdf

Edit: Have you considered going via London? Virgin Trains advance fares start at £5.30 (railcard discounted) each way, plus the £6.20 (NXECtis +railcard discounted) makes it affordable. However there's no through fares for via London, but allowing a 35 min connection could be faster than getting a through train.

Yada yada yada...

Liverpool-Peterborough via London won't be the quickest way in this case.

Liverpool-Leeds will be a couple of hours, then another hour to Peterborough.

No f*** about in London either.

I'm forgetting of course that Griff bums off '95 stock.

This is the way forward:

Code: Select all

arr dep Final Dest. for Train
Liverpool Lime St ---- 0922 Scarborough
Leeds 1109 1140 London Kings' Cross
Peterborough 1305 ---- --
This is as opposed to via London

Code: Select all

arr dep Final Dest. for Train
Liverpool Lime St ---- 0948 London Euston
London Euston 1200 ---- TUBE
London KX ---- 1300 Glasgow Central
Peterborough 1345 ---- --
Now I'm allowing for a fairly generous time in London since it claims you can catch the 1230 from KGX on the NR Website. I really don't think this is possible, and the next NXEC train (to Leeds Leeds Leeds) doesn't call at PBO. The 1300 is the most likely opportunity for you.

So 3hr 43mins as opposed to 3hr 57mins, on a cheaper route, with a much nicer train (the 185 reigns supreme over the 390), with less hassle, with no silly f**k about tube, and no fuss.

I am the king of railway planning. You even get time for a spot of brunch at the in-station Wetherspoons in Leeds Leeds Leeds.

EDIT: National Rail quotes:

Code: Select all

arr dep Final Dest. for Train
Liverpool Lime St ---- 0952 Norwich
Peterborough 1338 ----
That's not too bad either. If you can stand the 158.

For some odd reason it also quotes services via Manchester, Sheffield and Doncaster...

The only one it doesn't quote is London.
Just to p*** off the moderators, I won't edit this post into another...

Transpennine advance fares are equal to/if not better than Virgin's - Don't go anywhere near a Pendolino if you're going back to Peterborough. It's so far out of your way it's not worth it.

EDIT: Just as a note... ALL Liverpool trains used to stop at Stafford and Nuneaton. Nowadays they stop at neither.

I just checked to see if still going the same way does you any good - it doesn't. Changing at Crewe for the LM service isn't worth the hassle and adds an hour on to your shortest journey time, which, at the minute, remains my Leeds option.

Don't let me say I told you so...

Why would you get the tube from Euston to King's Cross? Its a 10 min walk at the most. 30 mins is more than enough time to make that walk easily.

It's a waste of £1.50 each way! Thenagain like you said, Griff does bum the London Underground. He'd probably take the Circle Line from Kings Cross to Euston Square, via Liverpool Street, South Kensington and Edgware Road :p
