How many have been received so far?

Still trying to figure out where to get something worth while around here. Have some great ideas in mind, but getting them is another story entirely.

I will have one for you, I just have to put it on the internets.

I'm surprised more people are not going for this one, it's a pretty "standard" topic - while not easy to win, as competition will no doubt be fierce, it's a fairly common aim for photographers to get good photos of freight... At least here it is, passenger trains in Sydney are a dime a dozen.

Do ECS movements count?

Aww, I only live about 4 and a half miles from a rail line, but in contrast to Raichase, only passenger services operate on it. Rarely does a freight roll by. :(

I'd have to go about 50 miles to get a good shot of a freight.

If only I could drive a car...

Or catch a train to where there is freight?

Don't worry Cornflower, I'm in the same boat (carriage?) as yourself. I live a 20 minute bus ride away from a very busy railway line, but it's a passenger only line - there is no freight allowed to use the line as it runs through the city underground, and the line is too congested already. To get to freight, it's usually another 30 minutes on a train, but to get the photos that I get, such as this one below:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/raichase/3026341612/

It's about two buses, two trains and four or so hours away from where I live. I'd have to get the bus to my station, then a train to the city, then change to a train to Campbelltown, and change to a diesel railcar to get down into the southern highlands, then (because they don't run more than two trains to the stations after Moss Vale anymore...) get another bus to Exeter, and then walk for an hour or so from there...

That said, I have a couple of mates and we always arrange to go out once a week after one or two interesting trains. We plan in advance which ones we're going for, get somewhere early, and then chase the train for a couple of hours until we either lose it, or it gets too far away from home. We then eat, and find something to chase back home.

If we wanted to notch up lots of photos, we'd still have to get the same distance away from town, only to park ourselves in one spot and watch them go by. The mainlines probably get an average of one freight per hour each way, but thats not a fair call, as freight trains are fobbidden from Sydney during peak hours, so the frequency is a little better around the time they can run, and then three hours with nothing...

Wow, thats quite an adventure for those beautiful photos, for me it's about one hour to the main town on the closest major rail line(Well 45 minutes, with my shortcut). Yet, luck was on my side this afternoon. I was able to arrange a trip along the aforementioned rail line this weekend. :) I'll take a few photos at this place: 35.200936°N 118.536249°W

Bloody typical. I almost always keep my Camera with me when I'm going out. This afternoon I forgot it and about 2 large freight trains passed me near the road and a 'convoy' of lorries.

Sods law.

I went to a large rail track a few days ago, but my pics are so bad, because I have to go there before or after work (and it's rather dark then). And no time to do that on the weekend.

Maybe I'll submit one, I have to check them again.

EDIT: I submitted it yesterday. Did you get it?

A disappointing number of entries this time, perhaps the topic was too narrow?

Erm... now is it allowed to discuss specific pictures here? Or is it just meant to keep the poll clean?
