How to buy stock?

Hi all,
I'm playing the Dutch version of OpenTTD so I'm not sure I'm using the right translation. But how can you 'buy stock' from opponent companies (not multiplayer)? The button to buy 25% stock is always grayed out even though I have more then enough money to buy the opponent company several times over.
Greetings and thanks,

Do you have it enabled in patch options? (i guess it is somewhere in the 'economy' tab)

How old does a company need to be in order to buy stock? I usually start a game with it saying "this company is not old enough to trade shares yet" then sometime down the road I forget entirely about it then spontaneously remember, presumably years after the company was old enough to buy in the first place. So exactly how long does one have to wait to start buying? =)

Company has to be founded five years in the past. For example: you start a new game in 1950. In May 1950 an AI company pops up. You can buy its stock from May 1955 on, but not before.

My wife and I were playing a game just now of Transport Tycoon and she said she just got a message saying "we are looking for a company to purchase our company" - which was my company, she chose not to, but if she did, would it have been game over for me? I've never seen that before or anything like it. I thought you couldn't own 100% of another company?

If you do a bad job as a manager and produce more cost than income, your company gets a three month period to raise its income. If you fail at doing so, your company will be sold and the game is over for you. So yes, if your wife had clicked on "yes", she would have owned all your rolling stuff and the game had been over for you.

Just having a negative balance is enough. You do get news items about it (company information iirc), it is a good idea to enable that news category!
