Palette query (quick!)

To figure out which colours are which, I'm using Oskar's palette guide. In the guide there is a grey marked as part of the water cycle (circled red on attached PNG), however when I colour pick from screenshots of the US set this grey is used in vehicles.
Can anyone tell me if I can use this grey safely? General opinion is that my ISR and Heavy Equipment graphics are too dark, and I think it's because I don't use this grey.

(BTW I am using a .act file to make TTD swatches available in photoshop, that works rather well).
cheers,
Andy

As I understand it, most *special* colours in the palette can be used and coded to work as default colours.
Pikkabird pointed it out on the BR Forums about company colours. Whether this extends to this is another matter, of course.

Hmm, I wouldn't touch it. If I recall, that colour is what creates the flashing white in the water.

This is a typical problem with the windows palette, which contains less colours than the DOS palette because of the number of colour entries needed for the Win GUI.
In consequence, the darker greys have been moved to other locations replacing some of the original colours, see attached picture.

Because the DOS palette is the more coherent one, I´m using it for drawing and only when using
grfcodec I switch to the Win palette, by specifying its "-m0" option.
And yes, you may use that colour entry.

Michael on your palettes that you posted 64 has two shades of brown, I always use the majority of that colour but could you confirm which is the correct one?

And in the Dos Palette?
Edit: and where is the transparent blue on the DOS palette for future reference, I thought that was 00 but it would seem not...

The transparent blue is in the same spot in the DOS palette as well.

Well, the colour doesn´t matter. In fact, every colour having entry 0 would be used as the "transparent" colour.
But for sake of avoiding confusion, I´ve added the usual "blue" to the DOS palette as well.

See above.
Just to re-iterate: the DOS palette contains six unique colours which the Windows palette does not support. These are
- 6A (dark brown)
- 28 (dark pink)
- 58 (dark green)
- 88 (dark blue)
- 20 and 21 (dark cream)
their colour map entries being used for the Windows dark grey tones 00 - 09.
And BTW, now it should be clear why the correct arrangement of the palette is of such importance.
