[8bpp] Light rail using very long articulated trams?

Hi all,

I'm currently writing an AI and I'm starting to feel a little restricted by the mechanics of buses and road networks. I'm trying to think in large scale terms and come up with strategies that will help the AI with high level planning. However since the only option available to the AI is one single model of bus at any point in time, all that planning is pretty much academic! I'm going to try to find a GRF for coaches so I can make a distinction between local/commuter and long-haul/express services, but I'd like something more.

Since its impossible to do trains yet with NoAI I'm looking at trams with great interest. Rather than using them like buses, I'd like to simulate a kind of light rail with long trains and high capacities. Think London Underground.

What's the longest an articulated tram can be? Do there exist any GRFs with trams that are 4-8 cars long? Am I going to have to make one?!

Cheers :)

The upcoming next version of the German tram set will feature quite long trams.

The generic road vehicle and tram set has double decker, normal, "coach" (express) and articulated buses along with short (3/4 car) articulated trams in the later years...

Ooooh, I like it! Actually I like it A LOT. This gives the just the kind of flexibility and distinction between service types that I've been looking for. Awesome!

Thanks very much Zephyris :)

Theoretically, an articulated vehicle can be 255 parts long, if I'm not mistaken.

The Dutch tram set features six trams with four or more cars. Note that the length of a car is not necessarily as long as your default rail car.

*Considers a docklands light rail grf*

I like the idea - if you get a GRF up I'm certain I'll use it
