Heliport
In comparison to an airport, a heliport has the great advantage that it takes up very little space. It can be built and expanded even if there is only very limited space available.

OK, on the large one, there's a heli in the top left of the image...

Terrible pixellation! Looks like an enlarged TTD Sprite...

Indeed, visit the homepage for Transport Giant and click the screenshots. It looks very decent!

No it doesn't, as the screenshots on the TG homepage are also JPEGs

Hans Schlicher said on the german forums of TG that the heli is really so pixelate because they want to reduce the mem usage and you wouldn't notice it when it's flying around...

Interstate buses

Image
Buses play an important part in long-distance passenger transport. They are an effective means of transport where investment costs for the railroad or even airlines seem a bit extravagant.

Heyland National

Compared with a railroad line, the investment for a bus route is rather low. This vehicle will often pay off even with a low volume of passengers, allowing the haulage contractor to profit from it for a long time thanks to its high reliability and low failure rate.

Change of leadership

This screenshot shows an image taken from the mission "Change of Leadership" of the Europe campaign. It's about the son taking over his parental haulage company. While his father enjoys his retirement on a southsea island, he must rehabilitate the company and put it back on its feet.

High-capacity high-speed trains will hardly be encountered on branch-line tracks. On the contrary, railroad companies will endeavor to economize and therefore employ means of transport adequate for the required traffic volume.
This railcar, also affectionately called "piglet taxi" in the vernacular, was the result of such endeavors, and has been used on branch-line tracks over a long period of time.
Oil mill

Oil mills are used to make olives into high-quality olive oil. The olives should obviously be taken there while they are still fresh to assure a high level of quality.

The maps dont look very big, look at the mini map in the corner of the last shot.

T egelkraut sez:

Its the smallest map you have

Posted: 27 May 2004 20:54
by mnorman
In the diagonal direction there are 27 squares across the screen. the diagonal of the screen on the minimap is 5 to 7 pixels (depending on whether the box is surrounding the area on the screen or is included in it). the minimap is then 127 pixels in the same direction (diagonal on screen, so down one side of the map).
this means that the map is between 18 and 25 screens across, and so is between 486 and 675 squares across.
this initially seems large compared with TTD, but rail vehicles in TG are 2 or 3 squares long, and so this is equivalent to a TTD map that is only 1/6th of the size (81 to 112 squares). Happily, this has been described by one of the team as a small map (as to be expected from an early campaign map)

Maybe not all maps are big. Try to think of the challenge a small map gies you! And who said the minimap was totally zoomed out? Perhaps it adjusts the coverage of the map on the zoom level.

I somewhere heard that there can be maps which are so large, that even fast trains do take a couple of minutes in real time to get from one end to the other.

That would be a very different sort of game, but fun. The building of the rail lines would be much more complicated, interesting, and realistic. In TTD everything is so close together that the main challengs is cramming all the tracks and interchanges in between the mountains, cities, and industries.
