Depots

Hi there,
I've discover OpenTTD recently and love to play it.

I'm wondering a few basic strategy questions:
* What is rule set governing depots (road or train) and reliability?
* Do vehicles visit multiple depots along their route?
* How can I calculate/estimate the optimal depot density?
* Can I transfer a vehicle/train from one depot to another. So that the depot is on its new route?
* Is there a way to call all (a certain number of, such as the one's that are very old) trains of a given depot back to it?

I'll leave it at that for today

Thanks in advance for helping me understand some basics that I could not find in the Wiki.

Every time a trains gets serviced at a depot it's reliability counter is reset. The exact value it is reset to depends on train type/age of vehicle.

You can set in the patches at which interval trains visit a depot. The default is 150 days. That means that after 150 days without being serviced at a depot the train will go looking for the nearest depot (even if that one is not on the route buton a side-track). However, if a train has a service at depot order in it's order list, it will only visit that depot (unless you order it to go to a depot directly).
* How can I calculate/estimate the optimal depot density?
Just try it out.
* Can I transfer a vehicle/train from one depot to another. So that the depot is on its new route?
No. Just let it drive/fly to it's new location.
* Is there a way to call all (a certain number of, such as the one's that are very old) trains of a given depot back to it?
Yes, but only for trains that have the depot in their order list. See the attached image. First click on 1. Then select 2, and choose, "send to depot".
