Getting back into TTD, OpenTTD or TTDPatch?

Hi, I've spent literally have my life in the 1990's playing TTD. I'd love to get back into the game seeing all this new and wonderful content but I'm not sure which version I should start with. TTDPatch or Open TTD? TTDPatch seems to support more add-on liveries and graphics but OpenTTD looks to be the future development. Help me out here! Thanks.

That's what I was fearing. What I'm particularly interested in is being able to use the Newstations.grf and and DB train set and possibly the articulated vehicles. Cheers.

I must say, I prefer OTTD because settings are easily adjustable (for example screen resolution compared to TTDPatch, which never worked for me with any res higher than 640x480). Also, the great multiplayer mode makes it my clear favorite. I do have TTDPatch on my computer and I also play it occasionally.

This is not supposed to make TTDPatch look worse than OTTD, just wanted to give you an opinion :)

Why don't you join one of my servers some time?

If you don't, hope you have fun with either one of the two anyways :)

One of the main differences is map size I'd say. Are you happy with the normal map size, or is it important to you to play on bigger maps?

I prefer the larger maps and I think I might give MP a shot. But my main goal is historic realism. I've got the DB trainset which is fantastic and the new 3D aircraft set by Pikka - amazing piece of work. Now I all I need is the Newstations grf to work for me, I don't get all the platforms in OpenTTD, anyone experience similar problems? Which vehicle set would you guys recommend WRT to realism and accuracy?

Thanks.

These work in both Patch and Open...
Actually, as already said, Open supports almost everything that Patch does.. For features main missing things are PBS and Enchaned tunnels.. But still Open has some features Patch doesn't.. so I suggest youto try out both and find out which one do you want. :)

And you reported this problem where, again?

For example signalling and rail-building compared to OpenTTD, where PBS, routing restrictions, signal programming, enhanced tunnels, and custom bridge heads have never worked for me.

Dalestan, please don't start that useless discussion again, which one is better and compare features.. I was just about to answer with things Patch doesn't have, but then realized, it would only add oil to fire. Don't do it. Please. Let him try both and let him choose what he likes the best. I for one use Patch for testing newgrfs, but rarely for playing.

I'll stop reporting Open bugs in the Patch-vs-Open threads when everyone else stops referencing unreported Patch bugs in those threads.

Its a known problem. He never claimed it was a bug, just that Patch isn't as user friendly as OTTD, which is obvious to anyone that has used both. Its almost amusing that you're so fixated on being deliberately argumentative, that you do so even in a thread which doesn't advocate one game over the other at all. All the replies (including this one) recommend trying both. If you're waiting for people to start recommending Patch over OTTD in the OTTD forums, good luck.

Some features of the DB set v0.82 are still not supported in OTTD. As to NewStations, I don´t know for sure but they should work as intended.

Nevertheless, as Dale pointed out, signalling in TTDPatch is far more improved as in OTTD where you´ll find only the ancient pre-signalling style. Having used PBS, restricted signalling and all the other sophisticated features of TTDPatch signalling you won´t be able to get back to OTTD.

OTOH, larger maps in OTTD seem to be a really nice feature, but I doubt MP over IP with all the known hassles is. 8)

regards
Michael

hmm.. I though only one way signals were ancient :D

To be honest.. I have yet to hassle with playing multi in OpenTTD.. Everything works for me as it should.

A few months ago - as a naive TTDPatch noob who had just joined the Forums - I also reported problems with changing screen-resolution to something other than 640*480. The thread went off into some weird off-topic meltdown, then some humourless TTDPatch user abused me when I tried to lighten the tone, and he even got the thread locked! So I never got any help with the screen-resolution issue - nothing that worked anyway.

I straightaway switched to OTTD, whose users I've found to be far more chilled and amiable.
Nowadays I just take the view that that TTDPatch thingy is run by a bunch of grumpy old men ...

Play TTDPatch, realise it's appalling, then install OTTD and burn the midnight oil. /subjectivity

Here we go again... I think it's not been 3 months since we last had this kind of thread....

If Patch doesn't work at resolutions other than 640x480, then either you found a bug, or you're willfully using the version where it doesn't work. If the former, you need to report it, and if the latter, then that's your fault, and completely irrelevant to any discussion of the relative merits.

Maybe he only has a limited amount of patience with an application that doesn't work right first time, and then when he asks for help he doesn't get any (or any *polite* help anyway).

Personally, I had Patch working fine on WinME, but when I moved to XP it didn't work. I couldn't find out why, (and at the time I wasn't into forums), and then I found OTTD - which worked first time, every time. I haven't bothered with Patch since, and frankly with the Patch proselytizers & supporters who like to argue on the OTTD forums apparently for nothing other than an attempt at a) belittling or b) irritating OTTD users, I dont want to ever bother with it. They have done MORE than anything else to forever put me off their offering.

A personal view, but relevant. (Not up for argument either - my experience is my experience; my choice is my choice.)
