Apocalypso Please - The New Future Set

Welcome to Apocalypso Please - the home of the New Future Set

This set is intended to replace Toyland as the fourth default climate in both TTDP and OTTD.

Let me fill you in on the basics:

1. This set is intended to be a whole landscape, industry and vehicle replacement for the original Toyland graphics.

2. The full and original set will contain only a small complement of vehicles similar in number to those in the Temperate Climate of the original TTD.

3. Graphic artists and developers are welcome to create their own graphic sets for the new Apocalypso Please climate to further diversify the reach and popularity of it in the future.

Here's a small list of FAQs I've put together, to save time in future.

Q. What's the setting for the AP climate?

A. It's going to be a post-apocalypse setting, with ravaged land, ruined towns and limited industrial resources.

Q. So what's the aim for the player?

A. The aim remains the same. To build a successful transport network by any means possible.

Q. What will make up the whole set?

A. In total; a landscape replacement set, bridge replacement set, town replacement set, an industry set, and full replacement sets for all vehicle types. There'll be other bits and pieces, but as I say - it'll be a total overhaul of a much rubbished climate.

Q. Will there be a story behind the way you design the climate?

A. Definitely, but you'll have to watch this space.

Q. So what needs doing!?

A. Just graphics. I'm going to be organising this set myself from the top.

Q. And one last thing - Apocalypso Please?

A. Yes. It is a hybrid of two songs. The first is Apocalypse Please by Muse and the other is Apocalypso by Mew. I like the title of both songs and couldn't decide which one for the set so used both!

***

So there you go. I need graphic artists and loads of them to help me build this hellhole of a new climate! ALL help is appreciated and will be credited if the work makes the final version.

I may ask a select few to come on board to help me tweak the layout and design of the whole set in the latter stages but that is a long time off in the future.

For now, I ask you to do nothing except formulate some ideas into your head, and have a tinker with some graphics. There'll be no graphics from the original game used, so OTTD doesn't need to worry about copyright issues. I'm currently in the middle of the planning stages for the original Apocalypso Please setup. It may change, and once the whole set is released you are very welcome to construct other sets to improve or further your AP experience.

Don't submit anything in this thread yet, but if you want to be a part of the Future Set (and make a serious contribution), then please feel free to jump in, add your name to the thread (I'll make a note) and ask any questions you're not clear on.

Yours, from somewhere deep in the future,
Dave Worley

Now this is indeed unique and well worth following. Now where is that button? Oh yes! There it is! "Subscribe now" ! Click

Next ... I am neither artist nor coder, but I do have a knack for story lines, conceptualizations and idea theft, so if you have any needs in those areas, I am free for the asking. sounds of synapses connecting

You have probably thought of this but just in case, I shall throw it into the pot:

Set up a spreadsheet listing in the first column all graphics as they currently exist. Then as things develop, the adjacent columns would reflect progress and who is working on what.

It's finally happened, you've gone mad.

Oh and just because I say this to any person that demands artists. Artists will join if they are interested, they can't be forced ;)

I'll see what I can do with this though, I might produce something, maybe.

If you encounter some graphics from me which you consider useful let me know. Perhaps I even can draw you some stuff if you got your ideas worked out more specific.

Here's an idea for RVs.

Yes! I am serious... I mean... Why not change the overall scale of the all thing... Instead of transporting 10000 litres of water, transport 10 litres for example. Instead od 500tonnes of MREs - 500kg od MREs (or even better: 500 MRE packets). It's postapocalyptic time, so resources are scarce, aren't they?

That'd make trains useless.

I'm not being evil when I say "I've got the ideas worked out myself".

Delegation seriously slows the project down and the full concept of the whole idea will be kept quite closely guarded.

This isn't just about building a set, this is an experiment - does a team of artists REALLY have what it takes to finish a huge set?

M'kay, m'kay... That was just a quick idea I got, when trying to imagine PTT (Postapocalyptic Transport Tycoon) :P

well good luck with it, I hope it will finish at some point.

Although I think saying it will be the new 'default' toyland climate seems like you're jumping the gun a little. I'm putting my money on the brickland set for ottd.

Your choice, but that's 32bpp.

I'm blowing off a bit... Everyone does it ;)

Get that storyline out. Then get organized and show us your plan of action.

Most areas will probably work quite well with several artists, but there will be some that will demand the consistency of a single artist, but it is too early to nail this down. Set the atmosphere! Show us that story line!

No storyline yet, but a brief intro, and a bit of an insight into what you need to expect:

"In a world ravaged by the meteor strike of 2320, you - one of a few thousand survivors - have been entrusted with the mammoth task of rebuilding your country's transport system. Using what is left undamaged, finding what you can for the government and managing a tight profit margin will all be a day's work by 2450.

Your friends are dead, your family is dead. There is only you left in a world of strangers. Now is your chance to save them.

Take on the harsh realities of futuristic industry - battle to reach remote resource stations that can only produce enough to fill your train once a month; send boats out to the vicious seas and the last oil reserves in the world; help to scavenge all the wealth you can for the government to rebuild their fledgling nation; bus stricken refugees around and fly the very wealthy from their safe underground bunkers to their friends in the next town.

Think you can handle the challenge? Then Apocalypso Please is the climate for you."

Nice concept Dave :D I'd be interested in adding some graphics to this one at some point. Petrol would be limited in supply, so diesel locomotives would probably not be an option, at least early on. Interesting idea, I'd be interested in seeing how it develops.

Yes, I rather thought that the way to go is to only allow formerly "super" locos to only operate at a fraction of their usual numbers to begin with.

Then as times goes on, introduce a "refurbished model" and then an entirely new model as the world gets back on it's feet.

That was the plan :)

Mind if I hop aboard?

My graphics aren't all exactly up to scratch, but I'm sure with enough time I can polish them off.

Also, if you'd like to set a graphical baseline, that is to say, an example of the style we should attempt to adhere to. Could make an artist's job a bit easier...

This might also be a good opportunity to refit an old project of mine to fit the theme.

I'll have something for you to muse over soon enough. (I hope, tis a busy year.)

Islacrusez

LOL! I love the concept!

I grew up watching road warrior and playing "Car Wars" (autoduel)...
this is so right up my alley.

i knew i was not the only insane person on this board with my unbrella corporation releases...

Out of curiosity, will this be standard grf's or the new 32bpp sprites? If your going new I might have some Stuff in my workshop you might like..

Obviously you did not come here via the OpenTTD notice, which says quite clearly that this is 8bpp only.

I expect you would be welcome to create/maintain both 8 and 32 bpp versions of anything you contributed, and to provide a tar containing your 32bpp sprites, but I doubt they would ever become part of the official Apocalypso Please set, and might well be invalidated by newer versions of AP.

Nope. i just wandered in off the street.. By the way, what is TTD?

~ducks~

I just went by the first post..

Well, then i have nothing to contribute but love... but, i'll gladly play it when done.
