Now, that the world has updated roads and stations, it is time for new bridges. Work on the North American Bridges Set [NABridge] has commenced and it will have the following features :

supported rail track systems :

. normal
. electrified
. monorail
. maglev
. narrow gauge

supported road surfaces :

. TT 'original'
. NA Roads 'dirt/brick'
. NA Roads 'bitumen'

Now, is the time to come forward, if there are any other rail track systems and/or road surfaces that anyone thinks should be supported too.

Further, if anyone has a bridge, that they like to have included in this set, let us know.

Are you looking for photos to draw sprites from or are you looking for sprites already done?

That would be sprites already done; e.g. Pikka's Viaduct would be a candidate. We are accepting bridge sprites, that we then equip with North American Road Surfaces; or road sprites, that we could use with the bridges. Those bridges would then become available automatically, if the original GRF containing the original bridge or road surface is active.

As for photos for new bridges; we already have a fair good idea what could be included. Having only 11 bridge types available does not give us many options though.

There was some discussion about North American Bridges over in the North American Roads thread revolving around Lifeblood's post here
I thought it might be convenient for continuity purposes to post the link in this thread.

How about including this minature cantilever bridge?
Image
Not many people have it. You could ask Danmack for it, because that is his screenshot.

That looks a bit odd because the supports at the back of the bridge aren't there so it ought to fall in :P

But it's not hard to add them. The bridge structure itself looks nice.

I do have the sprites for this one and it will be included, replacing the similiar girder bridge. All the problems with pillars will be fixed too.

I'm aware of that; I'll copy some of that info over here; sometimes tomorrow ...

This project looks promising :)

If you need any help with this set, I will be happy to help this set.

Thank you, the only help I can think of, would be in the graphics design department ...

Some of the ideas mentioned in the North American Roads Topic ...

Bridge suggestions by wallyweb :

Lion's Gate Bridge - Vancouver, BC
Confederation Bridge - Prince Edward Island
Peace Bridge - Fort Erie, ON
Rainbow Bridge - Niagara Falls, ON
Pont Jacques Cartier Bridge - Montréal, QC
Pont Victoria Bridge - Montréal, QC
Ambassador Bridge - Windsor, ON
Pont Québec Bridge - Québec, QC (collapsed twice during construction)
Hartland Bridge - Hartland, NB (longest covered bridge in the world)

Bridge suggestions by lifeblood :

culvert: concrete for roads/stones for rails
wood pole: same for both
covered bridge: same for both
early steel arch: Hells Gate Bridge for both
late steel arch: Gorge River for both
pony girder: concrete for roads/metal for rails
deck plate girder: steel girder for roads/trestle for rails
truss: same for both
early suspension: same for both
late suspension: same for both
stone arch: same for both

We have not a lot of room to move, but it is the intention to have the following bridges included :

1] covered wooden bridge, but not too long, may be up to 5 tiles (1920+).

2] Stone Arch or Viaduct bridge, similar to Pikka's Viaduct, if not that one (1920+).

3] Culvert or Causeway; not really a bridge, but eye-candy and you should not build it high or with roads or rail tracks under them. Multi-generational, in wood box for early years, natural stones or concrete later on. Also suited as trafficable dikes. (1920+)

4] Flat concrete replacement, but more than 2 tiles long. (1935+); currently in the works (engineers are biting their teeth out on that one, but is coming along nicely, see screenie). Bridge elements span 2 or 3 tiles and will be suitable as high bridge.

5] Trestle bridge, old fashioned, wood structure similar to culvert with no road/rail tracks below, but suitable as high bridge. (1935+)

6] Angled steel girder bridge (1935+)

7] ?

8] Hells Gate Bridge (special - 5 tiles only) (1945+)

9] Gorge River Bridge (special - 5 tiles only) (1955+)

10] Modern Suspension bridge (1975+)

11] Modern High Speed bridge, in style of Confederation Bridge (1990+)

Visually, we can implement different bridges for normal rail, narrow gauge rail and road, as long as they have the same or similar specifications; i.e. year of introduction, speed, cost, length etc. We can also have 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc generation bridges, implemented similar to 'dirt/bitumen' roads in NARoads.

Monorail and maglev will be catered for, but won't have an influence on individual bridges, except Modern Suspension and High Speed bridges. It will be up to the player not to build a covered wooden maglev bridge.

All suggestions are still up for discussion, nothing has been set in concrete.

For #7 may I recommend Confederation Bridge?

The web site in the link says it all.

How about as modern high speed bridge ? Without the buckle in the middle, not for the track/road anyway.

That would work.
Now I'll take my leave to think of a candidate for #7.
The bridges "named" in your list are Canadian. Perhaps someone has a suggestion for a US "named " bridge.

The only two useful named .us bridges that come to mind are Brooklyn and Golden Gate.

I recommend the the bridge ''Pierre-Laporte''Image

The bridge ''Pierre-Laporte that is right

The first bridge for inclusion has been evaluated. I believe the Confederation Bridge will be a worthy candidate.

I'll be going through all nominations. This will take some time, a bit of patience is required, but keep those ideas coming. If doable, they get on a short list; we then may have a poll to see what will make the final list.

EDIT: updated bridge diagram

The buckle at the center of the odd number spans actually does not exist on the Confederation Bridge. That said, its obvious you needed it to complete the span and that is ok. However, BL5 and 17 must have presented some challenges requiring some very interesting engineering solutions.

Our bridge has to be totally flat and straight, but the real one rises towards the middle. That is why I tried to lift the centre spans a bit. BL3/7 is shown a bit too high, but I'd like to have as much clearance below that part. The same goes for BL5/17. Most probably the 2 centre span types will look very similar, except one will have pillars the other one won't. The challenge will come, when they get actually drawn.

I thought, [in the first picture, you posted] you meant the one in front (left). Is Pierre-Laporte, the one that looks like the Golden Gate Bridge (rear/right one) ? What is the one in front (left) called then ?

To right is the Pierre-Laporte Bridge and to left is the Quebec Bridge. :D
