I still don't understand articulated engines (trains)

Discuss, get help with, or post new graphics for TTDPatch and OpenTTD, using the NewGRF system, here. Graphics for plain TTD also acceptable here.

I still don't understand articulated engines (trains)

Post by AndersI »

I thought I had some grasp of the subject (articulated engines for trains) after reading the wiki and looking at the GRFMaker example for adding tenders to engines, but looking closer, I don't really understand it :-(

Where is the connection between ID 4F and the graphid 0F? How does TTDP know which graphics to display?

I can create a three part articulated engine of three engines that are visible in the purchase window, but I don't want part 2 and 3 there. The GRFMaker example code works as I wish, but I don't understand it, and consequently I can't extend it to three parts (maybe I could, with 'trial and horror', but I want to understand it too).

Then just make an extra graphic which will be shown exclusively in the purchase window.

Action03 cargo-type FF is used for graphics shown in the purchase or construction window.

That´s the way I do it, it´s just more flexible.

Wow, that grf-maker is even more cryptic than plain .nfo.
