It would be handy if the train details window contained the name of the locomotive model used for that train, possibly do the same for the cars it hauls too.

I use UKRS, where a lot of the locos look very similar and quite often want to build a train using the same loco as another, but with a different carriage set

It does. Click on the "information" button at the bottom of the window.
