Re: The Thread Of Randomness
I just upgraded my computer. I've had the same setup now for 5-6 years and it was getting a bit old. I just bought new RAM, taking me from 16GB (2x8) to 64GB (2x32). Should make for a smoother experience playing those heavier games like late stage Europa Universalis IV, which needs to perform a lot of calculations.
It clocks in at 2133 MHz but the box says 3600 MHz, so I guess I have to go read up on how to get that set up properly.
Also, my BIOS does not show when booting up my computer because the screen only kicks in when it gets to the Profile/Login on Windows. It started acting like this when I upgraded to a monitor that required a Display Port cable instead of HDMI, so that's probably a thing too.

Re: The Thread Of Randomness
Often the speed on the box is not the normal speed, but the XMP (EXPO on some AMD boards) speed. Which is rather annoying and borderline misleading. You might need to enable that on the motherboard BIOS.
I'm not sure how to get around the monitor not getting a signal until later on. If your motherboard has a video output, you could try connecting to that for the boot & bios parts, unless the HDMI port is on that anyway, in which case... oof.
Re: The Thread Of Randomness
Yeah, I think getting the DP to display the BIOS is step one before I start messing with the actual speed of it.
My workaround for a year or so has been to crawl down under my desk, remove the DP cable, plug in an HDMI cable, and boot up with that. Then, perform whatever I need in the BIOS before then re-plugging the DP cable. HDMI does not provide a high enough resolution.

Re: The Thread Of Randomness
Oh, I am very excited about who has today been announced as a guest at Comic-Con Scotland this year (I already bought tickets a while ago). I may have to change my avatar come October…

One of the companies I worked for had policy that fired workers if we called the Affordable Care Act, Obamacare! There were signs in the break room saying that eating somebody's lunch was the same! It was fine to eat the food in there desks?

Re: The Thread Of Randomness
Any Germans here?
I will be travelling to Berlin for the first time this summer. Yes, I've never been.
I am hoping for some suggestions, ideas, good to know, places to visit, and more!
For example:
1. Should I get the "Deutschland Ticket" for free journeys all over (€49) or should I get a 7-day ticket with BVG (same price if including Berlin-Brandenburg Airport)? We will be in Berlin for five days, so the time period difference does not matter to us. Or should I get the five day "WelcomeCard" which is aimed at tourists, costs €53 for fare zones ABC, and includes discounts to stuff in Berlin?
2. What are some things you recommend visiting, seeing, or doing in Berlin except the OBVIOUS tourist stuff like the wall, Brandenburger Tor, Checkpoint Charlie, and all that? Maybe there is a transport related thing which would appeal to nerds like us!
3. Is there something I should AVOID, maybe a specific tourist destination, experience, museum, restaurant, or area?

Re: The Thread Of Randomness
I am not German (this may come as a surprise to you), but we've visited Berlin twice and thoroughly enjoyed it both times (and would like to go back sometime, though it's a more daunting prospect with 5 kids!). I think we got a WelcomeCard each time (but back then there wasn't the Deutschland ticket - the last time we visited was 2018), but we were visiting lots of touristy things so made use of the additional discounts.Chrill wrote: ↑08 May 2024 20:36 1. We were visiting with children (a 2-year-old the first time, and an 8-year-old and 2-year-old the second time) so my experiences were of course formed around that, but we very much enjoyed the zoos, if you like that sort of thing. There are a couple of them, and both are worth a visit. The Aquarium is good too, as was the AquaDom, but you're about a year and a half too late to visit that I'm afraid.
From a transport-related perspective, the Deutsches Technikmuseum is good, and has trains. There's also a U-Bahn-Museum which I think we may have visited on our first trip, I don't quite remember exactly, but could be worth a look?
Re: The Thread Of Randomness
I cannot accept this. I knew you had several by now, but FIVE! Wow, congratulations!

Re: The Thread Of Randomness
Well, we had 3, then lockdown happened, then unexpected twins happened...
They're about to turn 3, and indeed start nursery in August, then we'll have half a day each weekday with no children in the house, for the first time in many years!
