[OTTD] Early Engines Set

Since it is theoretically possible to put the starting date back to 0 AD in OpenTTD, I figured it might be fun to make an OpenTTD-only set of really early Locos (Salamander, Rocket, Planet, Patentee), leading up to some of the slightly more advanced ones (Striling Single, Midland Spinner, Claud Hamilton).

So, what do people think about this? It would enourage people to switch to OpenTTD.

I think I wouldn't use it, because those engines are way too slow.

It won't encourage people to switch to OTTD, because this function is already in TTD patch nightlies. For example UKRS is already using it. It isn't really good idea for me, because it would require change in industries to have correct industries for time period and it can only be done in TTDpatch.

Hmmm ... perhaps you clicked in the wrong section. This is the TTDPatch Graphics topic. The OpenTTD Graphics topic is in the next section down. Here is a link in case you can't see it:

I don't want to start a flame war, but I'd like to challenge the assumption that everyone should switch to OTTD, especially given the big question mark surrounding its legality.

However, I would enjoy playing with an early engines set, provided it was patch-compatable.

I don't want anything being unclear to anyone so I urge everyone not to start a flamewar or even a civilised debate about the legality of OTTD. We have had them before and I'm quite positive I speak on behalf of the entire moderator team if I say we are not looking forward to the same moot remarks again.

I have done planning work for a 'UKRS 1850' grf. However, until certain things (ie, the town growth) are fixed or made customisable in OTTD, I'm not particularly interested in finishing it.

PikkaBoiyad has spoken!

If thou fixeth thou problems, PikkaGod shall delivereth from his desktop a shiny set of 1850eth trains for you to mess with how you choose.

Amen to that brothers.

You can start Patch game before 1920? :?

And Serbian set too. You have first locomotive in 1873.

That's something we (or at least I) want to change too, so hopefully it will be possible to customise it before too long. :)

I think the gamebalance branch is the right place to change these things  .

Umm, yes, that was where we were planning to change it. :P

Trying not to be a "gimmee" here, but I would very much enjoy earlier trains. I would be glad to help with any sort of research on early American locos.
1920 is great with the American trainset, but my interests run more to 1880-1890. The short trains common to this period also allow you to use smaller 3 and 4 square long stations successfully.
Also IMHO locomotives of the period weren't necessarily slower. Speed was a function of driver diameter. A "high stepping" ten wheeler (72" or larger drivers) could make close to 100 mph on level track. An identical locomotive with 60" drivers would have a much lower top speed, but greater tractive effort. I will try to find the WW I era USRA specs for driver diameters and post.

There's a patch option now to change the rate of town growth, from none, to normal, to very fast. Or did you want something other than that?

Nope, that's great. Although I am working on other things at the moment. :)

I like this idea! This would add more variety of vehicles and more length to the game. Also we can make a 'crossover' grf that contains locomotives of TTO and mixes the temperate, artic and desert trains, and all locomotives are present in the three landscapes (maybe toyland too?).

Also the busses should have more variety, and the trucks too plus when articulated road vehicles comes into trunk, we should make like 10-15 trucks with a trailer for each cargo, and there are different classes of them, each one in agreement with the time line and the use that will be given to it (quick transport, heavy cargos transport, etc.). Here too can be used TTO models.

Same thing can be applied to the airplanes and ships.

Also trams / trolleybuses can be considered. In my city for example there were trams ~5 years after the city's fundation (I think this happened in 1885-1890). But them closed 31 december 1966 :(. I think because of traffic issues, but that is off topic :).

And we can think on new transportation methods like vacuum tubes or similar for the future. Or maybe [how are called the ones that can take off from the water??].

The list continues with a long etc.

Well the TTO pack adds a great variety of extra vehicles for the normal ttd expenrience

yes, older vehicles would be nice, but also older buildings, and muddy road too... we already have trams, and in the 19th century, there were "horserail" what was bit like a tram, but pulled by horses, before the electrification. And in some places, there were steam-powered trams, maybe even petrol or diesel powered ones...

Yeah, and we shoulda use some futuristic vehicles... but i mean, divided into "fast but weak passanger trains" and "strong but slow cargo trains"

Because the same engine of the same sized vehicle can be used with different gears, or transmissions...

1: focusing on speed
2: focusing on torque

oh, and i guess the vehicles shoulda look like vehicles, not like UFOS... i mean, they shoulda look like a "normal" train from the 1990s, 2000s, but with fuelcell engine or hydrogene powered combustion engine...
