Do HQs actually serve any purpose, or do they just exist to show how "big" a company is?

Only in OpenTTD as far as I'm aware. In plain TTD and TTDpatch they do not accept anything or produce anything.
So in answer to your question, they only really serve as eye candy. :)

Well, you can click on it to view your company window, IIRC. :O

I have a bit set that says they provide a rating bonus in whatever city they're built in. But I don't have any evidence of that on hand.

I think that when you have already raiting in one city, and build HQ, your rating increase with one level. But if you are appaling, or very poor, this tip don't work.

Thanks :)

I've just been trying to make my HQ look as asthetically pleasing as possible anyway - and placing it as close to my main station as I can :D

Gameplay-efficiency based, you better place your HQ somewhere a town doesn't build buildings, so there'll be more passengers and mail for your main station (assuming it isn't a freight station).
Additionally, in OpenTTD I always pace the HQ within the catchment area of one of my stations (usually the smaller ones).

Well I feel stupid, I thought it was just eye candy, so I just stuck it on the first part of the map I see. Whoops

In OTTD you can move your HQ to another place. I don't know whether TTDP provides the same feature.
