I've also installed the german tram set from this site: http://www.gertrams.de.vu/

As far as I can understand from searching this site I also need to install something called tramtrk.grf but I can't find it anywhere. Can anyone help?

If you have Patch 2.5.8, you don't need tramtrkw.grf, you need ttdpbasew.grf. This is GRF with all base sprites including tram tracks. Find it here.
