Please take a look at the screenie, and i think everything explains itself. Wouldn't it be nice if station built close to eachother would be joined too?

Of course. It would save time and money because you don't have to use smaller stations to link bigger stations together (is it called station jumping or something?)
Naturally, a window should pop up, asking you whether you want the stations joined up or not.

the stations won't be joined as Locomotion, where you can join 2 stations at 2 tiles of distance, in OTTD you have to directly link 2 stations
if you want to link 2 tiles far stations, you may use buses and lorries bays to make a "bridge" beetwen the stations, then delete unused bays
this also can be done using stations, but you have to remove pieces with the apposite tool, because if you use dynamite, you clear all the station tiles

yes, i know that trick, and use it a lot

but it doesn't always work with towns, because sometimes it is necessary to remove roads and houses, wich is not always allowed.

that's not always possible like in the screenshot. The town will not allow you to remove the road

i think it's a good idea, ie whenever u build a new station if there's another one belonging to you in the catchment area then it will ask you if you want to join them

How about control click when you place it to join to nearby stations? Many alternate functions use control already. Also it should show a list of all stations in its catchmen area. There could be multiple stations nearby

don't forget, (Except for the subsidiaries patch) not to list competitors stations.

One idea i just thought of is that when you press ctrl, it pops up a box with all other stations in the (catchment?) area, so you can choose which one to merge with.

you can do this better if catchement areas of placed stations are visible
i think that is not so difficult to add a button on the station's info window to show the catchement area
also when you want to build a new station all stations' catchement areas should appear and you can view where is needed the station
a modification of this should be useful by highlighting the local authority area around a city

This would have to be implemented very carefully, i think.
Otherwise you could chain together stations across the map... It would need to check the max-station-spread as well.

it would help if the catchment area wouldn't just grow when a new station is being added, and station would only be joined if the catchment area overlaps
On a related note

How about an option that allowed you to join 2 stations together (when they belong to you, and you build a station joining both) that automatically changed all the orders of veichles to go to the new combined station.
