Powerlines

I have one strange idea, but I think that this is not so imposible. I haven't got any idea how it can be done, but I hope that someone will such and will help.
I have this idea from long time, because when we carry the coal in power plant we take the money but the power plant is not producing anything. So I will glad if someone can help.
And I'm sorry but my English is not very good.

It has suggested before, And I think that George is working on it.
Do me a favour, and post your suggestions in the suggestions forum.

Well, you could easily transform the transmitter towers into powerline-towers (or however those are called), and in a scenario you can build them in a line. This is the way I remember RA2 did. And I suspect it should be pretty easy.

My idea before was:
1:When I build a powerline to get something like divident or something like that. But that mean that all source of game must be changed. That's why I think that this will not hapen.
2:Or other Idea that I have is to get power from power plants and to redirect it to the electric sistem of company railway. That might be more realistic.
I don't know I'm new here.You tell me :D

It's probably too much work for too little ... (I lost the word).

Yes probably you are right, but that can insert something like new element in this game, example: no coal to power plant, no electric in powerlines, no electrified trains.
I agree that this is to much work, but I think that this can change the game very much, I don't know if someone like this idea but it is not so imposible i think.

I don't know. In every game there is actually somebody transporting coal anyways. However, I sometimes play and only build passenger traffic, which would mean I cannot use EMUs.

"Something is impossible only until someone does it" (or something like that)

As someone said in the other topic imagin the power lines are underground.

That would still need a patch which disallows electric trains when no coal is supplied...

And if powerlines are underground you won't need pylons to support powerlines would you? Then 'all' you need is a way to link coal delivery to power stations to allow electric trains to run i.e.. That creates a silly problem though: you need to run diesel or steam trains first before you can run electric trains.

Not necissarily. E.g. in Switzerland, hydroelectric power plants were built together with the tracks, e.g. on the Spiez-Frutigen line (first section of BLS) in 1900. In fact, having hydroelectric power available was the first reason to develop electrical traction, in contrast to countries which had vast amounts of coal, e.g. Germany and the U.K. where usage of steam locomotives were more common.

So, in fact, both reasons could be omitted. 8)

... and you could complicate it even more, by requiring coal for steam trains, and a running refinery, for diesel engines

As Tex Murphy said:

Hmm ... Coal for steam ... Power for electric ... Oil for diesel ... Petrol for RV's ... Hydrogen for fuel cell ... sounds realistic to me ... perhaps a callback implementation?

I'm glad to see that some of you enjoy this idea, and I think that if the game is more realistic it will be very good, because now is though only in the beginig and then go very easy. I don't think that this will comlicate the game very much but like that it will have other face.If you want I can try to draw some suport for powerline, but I don't think that I will do it good.I hope and others will like the idea.

Being the resident realism nazi, you're going to be shocked when I say this:

Realism should be second to game play.

No point in being uber realistic, if it makes the game too complicated to play. Remember, it's a transport simulation, not an economic simuation. If we are going to be having electricity, diesel, coal, why not also add steel for locomotives, add in aluminum as an additional cargo, which is needed to make airpplanes?

Why not then make all vehicles built in factories, and delivered to the railway? After all, having them just pop out of a depot seems a bit odd to me.

What I mean here, is there is a difference between realism, and making the game needlessly complicated.
