TTDPatch Alpha 48 and VMWare

Okay, I am running the latest version of VMWare Workstation (Beta5 under Ubuntu Linux), I just installed WinXPHome, I just installed TTD and I did a fresh install of TTDPatch Alpha 48. I used the default config and didnt make any changes whatsoever. Now, when I go to run TTDPatch, it crashes and I get an error report (Attached).

This is a pain in the arse, and chance of a workaround or fix? Or is it a similar problem to Virtual PC under OSX?

Also, I am having another try with Windows ME and the Win2k switch disabled in TTDPatch. We' ll see where this leads, may be a WinNT+VMWare issue :? .

Okay, some more information:

With Acceleration disabled for the VM, TTD starts and runs fine. Except the whole VM is then dog slow, thus TTD is.

Now, with acceleration, it all runs nicely. And when you run TTD, somtimes it crashes the seccond the game window is generated, somtimes you can get three secconds in before it crashes.

Would catching a crash-report for both cases help?

(And to test VMWare, download the Beta 5 from their site, they'll send you a serial key, not sure how long it lasts though =/)

Okay, this is going a bit far for double-posting, but anyways.

Im pretty sure this issue is mouse and/or keyboard related. If I start TTDPatch and leave the mouse still, it loads and then works fine after a couple of secconds of mouse stillness. Also, if somthing draws ontop I think it also stuffs up, might of just been me swatting the window away though.

Also, when it then loads up and works, r-click+drag movement is really hyper.

Hope that helps.

Would the crash report show if anything input related was screwing up?

EDIT: Also anything that would change the cursor screws the game up. Also, on latest testing, moving the mouse at all after game-startup stuffs up. Keyboard testing is next on the agenda. Im starting to think that this is a VMWare Tools issue aswell :? . Anyways, bed time for me. Ill watch this thread anxiously for any replies ;).

All I can say at this point is that the crash is not in TTD nor TTDPatch code. Could be wine or some other dll that's loaded. No idea.

Have you tried the various display mode settings in TTconfig?

Indeed I have, and another thing, I haven't even installed Wine yet. Just a clean, fresh WinXPHome VM with TTD on it. Also, I seem to get less crashes with windowed mode, with windows cursor (Mode 1).

Oh right, VMWare not Wine.

I think if this is just for TTD, you'll have more luck running DOS TTD in plain DOS, especially now that VMWare has proper VESA support. It would also make your disk image a whole lot smaller. Or else, Windows 95 with WinTTD.

Well, Im testing Windows ME right now, TTD runs fine by itself, but Im about to test it with TTDPatch right now.

Do you think that maybe some of the issues me and Cornelius have had might be related? I know he's using a completly different VM software on a completly different OS and processor architecture, but their might still be somthing in common.

Oh well, if this works, then its all good. I wouldnt want to pressure anyone into trying to track down a bug, or issue, considering the amount of effort it would require.

Last minute note, TTDPatch Alpha 48 does indeed work in a Windows ME Virtual Machine. All is well :D .

The crashes have a totally different character, though. I can't see any link.

Glad it works now, though :)

Ahhwell, I just thought their might be a small connection, maybe with how the accelerated mouse and driver features work.

Thanks anyway Patchman, My VMWare setup now runs nicely :D.
