A glimpse of things to come

There hasn't been a release of OpenTTD in quite some time, but don't get the impression the developers have been dormant, there are many goodies waiting for you!
The biggest change is a whole new network core: It's much more stable than the old one while using very little bandwith.
Ingame chatting is possible, patch settings are finally synchronized and it has a nice GUI for starting games and connecting, where you can also search for servers on LAN.
There also is a dedicated server option which uses just a text console, so you can easily start a server on a distant box via SSH and screen.

The support for newgrf has been greatly improved: now quite many .grfs work which didn't before, like DBSetXL (though there are still a few glitches).

OpenTTD now runs on more platforms/operating systems than ever, these include: AmigaOS, BeOS, all BSD flavors, Linux, Morphos, QNX, Solaris/SunOS, Windows and probably most other systems where SDL has been ported to
And speaks more languages: catalan, czech, danish, dutch, english, finnish, french, galician, german, hungarian, italian, norwegian, polish, portuguese, romanian, slovak, spanish and swedish
Some more languages, like icelandic and latvian, are being worked on.
Now it is possible to use the .grf files from the DOS version of Transport Tycoon Deluxe, though this still has a few glitches which will be addressed soon.
For all users with big endian machines (like Macs or Sparcs) out there: it's finally possible to load Transport Tycoon Deluxe savegames without the intermediate step of a little endian machine.
Also an improved loading algorithm is availible, which prevents empty vehicles from loading cargo if another vehicle is already loading the same cargo type.
Windows now snap at each other. (of course you can switch it off, if you don't like it)
I wonder, where the TTDP guys got this idea from... ^^
An old bug which prevented using resolutions which were not multiples of eight in width or height to be used has been corrected, so now every possible resolution can be used - as there are some odd displays out there, like laptops with 725 lines.
Also many, many other bug fixes...

The catchment area is now a bit more realistic: An international airport has a larger range than a bus station.

Ever wanted to know which vehicles go to THIS station? No problem anymore: Just choose the vehicle class in the station window and there you go!

There's some more being worked on, but it is not yet finished and will probably not be ready for the next release.
Nonetheless let's have look:
Multiple bus stations and lorry loading bays - this makes road vehicles competitive!

Hi, this is my first reply here! I've been playing TTD since 1996 and I thought OTTD great! How about biggermaps? It's still at work?

You always can check this page:
http://wiki.openttd.org/index.php/MapRewriteProgress
If all files finished here, than the bigmap project is ready.
