Nice work - it's great that we're building up the graphics community for OpenTTD - so far it seems to have been lagging.

Now we need a gifted 3D programmer who can start making test applications for testing out different ideas for the 3D engine hybrid thing that could be coming up.

Just out of interest, of any devs reading this, do any of you have much experience in developing 3D graphics engines?

trackjd, its not actually a 3d engine. its just a higher resolution, and higher bit version of the current.

comparison.

OLD
256 colours, 64x32 pixel sprites.

NEW
16 million colours, alpha channel, 128x64 sprites (upgradable)

wouldn't we need replacement graphics for the current trains in Open, and not new ones before we got off and start a country specific set?

to help you out of confusion: this is for a total new graphics engine. the total graphics replacement is something totaly different. ill be making locomotives from all over the world.

its a new graphics engine, yes.

for openttd. Everything in OpenTTD needs to be redrawn.

there is no ns 1300 in openttd. IF the original graphics aren't replaced, we will have great terrain and trees and track, but the same old trains.

is this new graphics engine going to work the same kinda way at the current one... i.e Carriages are half a square long, because if they are mifune's train needs to be shrunk a bit. (unless its intentionally double length)

Looks nice! could you please post the model? I plan to do a demo with opengl, with pre-rendered landscape and realtime locomotives, but I need some train models to try it...

Many thanks!

The picture looks just awesome! Keep up the good work.
The new engine will work kinda like the old one just with more fluent curves and turnings, as well as REAL variable sized wagons. TTDPatch cheats around this, but it is not the ideal solution.

We do want to keep the sizes a bit to ttd scale; eg. a locomotive that is 2 squares long is not the way to go.

locomotives and such i think will be about 75% of a tile. we changed the scale of the tile to 25mx25m i think. (well approximatly) so that we could co-ordinate the scale of the roads, to the tracks a bit better.

but rest assured these things will be ironed out over time.

:D

you don't HAVE to replace all old trains at all... only if you want to keep everything completely backwards compatible with for instance your old savegames.

there is no problem with throwing out all old trains and putting in new ones if you want to.

:D :D

it would actually be impossible to recreate all old trains in the new GFX set, as it would require hundreds of trains to be re-made before the engine was ready to be shipped with a version of OTTD.

and backwards compatibility is out the window as a slightly different track layout system is being used which is very powerfull, and very easy to lay tracks with.

ive made a hoppercar: http://members.lycos.nl/blenderonline/hopper4/test.html

the text and the colour is easily ajustable so i can get many colour versions without much trouble.

btw. it is possible for me to render these vehicles at a smaller scale. so i can handle some requests from makers of graphics for ttdpatch. then i kill two flies with a stone.

I don't think rendered grahpics for ttd will look good, although they are a base for starting more 2D work...

I really like the model but I don't think that TT should be in 3D :(

I think 3d models can be used in making very large amounts of sprites needed by the upcoming new rail curves...
