Train waiting when it doesn't have to?

Post by zkreso »

I'm a bit confused with a station I created, the train seems to wait unnecessarily at a signal. It's a bit hard to explain with words, so I attached some screenshots.

Thats normal. Every (driving) train reserves a part of the track in front of it. But I think this part is too long.

i dont think its a part of the track... i guess its 2 signals ahead... maybe you could place more signals.

With only two trains on the line why not seperate the two lines so that they don't have to wait ever? With a short run like that it isn't really practical to be having them connected to each other.

Matt & Jmaster: Thanks for your replies, I'll experiment some more.

Vimp: Because it was done for testing purposes only, obviously there is no grain traffic between two middle of nowheres.

Sorry I hadn't noticed that it was just a test setup.

I think you'll find the reason is because the waiting train would not be able to accelerate fast enough to get through the junction before the other train reaches it, casing a crash. Try again, and tell the train to ignore the signals and see what happens

Trains queue a certain part of the track automatically. It is really quite annoying and I wish I could disable it. It doesn't matter how many signals you put or the acceleration of the train. I've had trains that were over 60 squares away queue the remaining part of the line causing a huge traffic jam at an intersection where at least two trains could have crossed before the first reached it.

Chod: Interesting... as you may or may not see, the screenshots here are of a test setup. It was when I made a longer route that I discovered this problem actually, and like in your case the train was far far away but still blocked the intersection.

On the subject of signalling problems

I keep getting situations where signals wont clear unless the next 2 sections are clear. I've checked for trains not quite clearing sections etc. Also, trains that stop at the affected signals wont pass them at danger despite me telling them to with the pass signal button.
I'd post a screenshot but i think i might of deleted the save game.

Basically i've put a signal A, station building, signal B, junction signal C.

Signal A doesnt clear until signal B clears. I have the basic signalling pack that comes with the game {ie unmodified}

I'll post screenshots if people dont get what i mean :D

cheers

If signal B was a 2 way signal then that might be why, because 2 way signals act as presignals.

if you look from the lower station (on the pic) towards the upper, the first lefthand signal after the H crossing needs to be double, right? otherwise the incoming train is reserving that junction?

I've got a problem of a train getting stuck with the 'the next lot aren't clear' but the fun thing is this track is halfway across a crossover and is therefore stopping the signals becoming clear, but it doesn't respond to my frantic hammering of the SPAD button!

The 'ignore signal' button, which essentially orders the train to do a SPAD. (signal passed at danger)

Don't feel bad, just try and use a European keyboard in a DOS window and try and figure out which keys produce the right symbol! Lucky I remember that # is on '3', perhaps. €!!!!

Here's a map of US standard keyboard (top row only):

1 - !
2 - @
3 - #
4 - $
5 - %
6 - ^
7 - &
8 - *
9 - (

Yeah, I had US keyboards until I was 18, so luckily I still remember most of it. I can't get over where ~/# are on Euro ones, I often push # when I mean to hit enter!
