No worries, we need a coder first anyways to tell us what exactly is possible.

If you guys draw a real ship, it'd be nice to know it's real stats, and perhaps even a picture* for reference. If it got a name, nice to know too.

Nah, I really want one with several barges in tow (if you don't mind). However I've made each barge several pixels narrower, this will look better. Also, the old version probably would have had clipping problems on rivers.

Idea:
Empty: No barge
Half-full: 1 barge
Full: 2 barges
?

Looking good as a start, both Andy and lead@inbox. What we need to decide here as well is a standard size. I think the lake boats look way too small personally, they should be slightly larger (wider). I'm all for a scale approximating MB's ship set, or the current redrawn sprites for the OpenGFX project. This way, ships are considerably wider than trains and retain their bulk, while still looking in proportion.

Currently it looks like 80px long is the max limit feasible (although I'd like to try one longer, just for shiggles) and see how it looks. maybe stack a couple ship depots end for end if it looks weird having a long ship exit it.

I fo one would like tos ee the bigger lakers around 100px long, if done correctly, routing away from coastal tiles shouldn't be a problem.

Also, Buttercup has agreed to code this for us :D

BTW, Does OTTD have the ablilty to use bouys as stations?

I think you're right, but I'm wanting this scale question to get answered first ;)

My $0.02 then:
- I know that ships have to be scaled differently to trains and RVs (which don't match scale to each other anyway), but I think the test is how well they fit in game, so we need to knock up some teasers. I've found I sometimes complete sprites, then see them in game or a teaser and realise I need to redraw for a different scale  So I've attached a teaser to see what we all think.
- I'm with Dan on the lakers etc. Think they should look as big as possible. Same with the barges (and log raft if I draw one). MBs cruise ship is around 95px long in the side view. That's a good size to work to. (I've increased the barge tow to 4 barges, and it's still smaller than the cruise ship).
- The small GCV replacement looks spot on to me, perfect size and style.
- Huge ocean-going ships are never going to look in scale. So how about we don't bother with them? We can get a lot of gameplay and eye candy out of coasters, tugs+lighters, barge trains, schooners, ferries, pleasure cruisers, stern-wheelers (paddle steamer), narrow boats and lakers.

That looks frickin' awesome! Please please please code as many ships as possible to the "half tile" scheme like the longboats...

Nice collection here :D

I am seeing some proportion issues that may need to be addressed however. The narrowboats are designed to be half a tile wide, anything else should be full tile width. The Great lakes boats should be about the same scale as the GCV for the OpenGFX ship set

Let's think on this for a minute... A 60' railway car in TTD, let's say, is 30px long. Ships, by their general nature, are about 10 times this. Theoretically, that makes a 600' ship approx 300px long at this scale, not acceptible given the turn-on-a-dime ways of ships, not to mention clipping.

Trying this at half the size of trains, that 600 foot long ship becomes a slightly more reasonable at 150px long, still very large, but managable with proper routing to eliminate clipping on coasts.

I'd like to see a larger sized ship and see how it works in-game... Juast a mockup, nothing supremely detailed, jsut to see what can be accomplished.

On another note, Lt. Gable has gracuiously said we can use some of his Trans atlantic liners for the set as well.

Yeah, I have to agree with Dan on this one as well. Ships in TTDLX has always been a disappointment - especially when it comes to sizes. I too would like to see a mock-up for the sake of in-game behavior...

When you say "narrow boats" are you talking the sort of British canal type narrow boats or something larger?

Hey SAC!

Yeah, sorry, by narrow boats I was referring to the canal boats
