It was decided to prepare for a future phase by building the access to the Lakeville East Subdivision as well as sidings to the steel mill whose stations will be built when the iron mines are opened.

Having failed at its environment commitments, NVP was advised by the Local Authorities that work on the new Midville Station would have to be delayed until proof of better a financial situation was shown. Unfortunately, NVP had insufficient resources for bribes.

Meanwhile, it was decided to realign the South Falls bypass to accommodate longer trains. The Riverton bypass was believed to be fine as it was.

It was also time to renew NVPTC's road vehicles, which should greatly help restore our outstanding relationship with Midville's Local Authorities. We opted to upgrade to model 2 double decker buses. The wood trucks would be replaced with the same model 2's already in service. As productivity at Winterlude Forest #1 was very good, four wood trucks were added to the service. Due to low productivity at South Falls Gravel Pit #1, only two gravel trucks were renewed with the other two being placed in storage at the Midville Auto depot.

For some strange reason our cinema patrons have been getting mighty hungry and thirsty so we have sent our crews up to Plainston to film the opening of The Isle of Nars agricultural region.

With the completion of the new Midville Station, the citizens were pressing their respective Local Authorities to demand express passenger service between Summerville and Midville and between Midville and Winterlude. Seeing as how these runs could be rather lucrative, NVP decided to move on this immediately using UAC Turbo Trains.

The new express services were indeed very lucrative and NVP was able to retire its debt by the end of the year. It was time to press on with Phase 11.

Phase 11 would be connecting Summerville to Plainston and be known as Plainston West Subdivision. Plainston is located at the eastern end of a high mountain valley, a prime agricultural area. The line is important to move livestock and produce down to the Summerville food plant. The major challenges would be the switchbacks required to climb up Plainston Escarpment to the valley to the west of Summerville. Once completed, passenger service was provided to Plainston with an EMD GP38-2 with 60:17 gearing and with one mail, a sleeper and two passenger coaches.

Once passenger service was established, a transfer station would be set up to gather grain and livestock using GP38-2's geared at 65:12 for shipment down to the Summerville food plant. Food would then be shipped as goods throughout the island. Two Model 3 box trucks from Summerville Auto Sales would deliver into Summerville. An EMD GP38-2 geared at 60:17 for speed and hauling five 40' reefers would serve South Falls and Plainston. A pair of EMD GP38-2's geared at 60:17 and hauling ten 50' reefers would service Midville. Other trains to service the other communities would be brought on line later as other farms were brought into the enterprise.

Plainston Farms 1 and 2 were serviced by Model 3 trucks purchased from Plainston Truck & Auto Sales. The other farms would require rail service. Farms 3 and 4 would receive the first rail service at a later date.

I think I've just found my nomination for next months Screenshot competition in the form of the switchbacks up Plainston Escarpment. Fantastic shot, so simple but so effective. :D

Before continuing with passenger rail service development, it was noted that the two coal services were showing problems. NVP Collieries 1 and 2 were nearing depletion. Productivity had fallen accordingly. It was time to reassess the services and perhaps open new mines as phase 12.

It was decided to open collieries #3 and #5 with a local engine shop to service train 1918, an EMD GP38-2 geared at 65:12 and hauling 6 large hoppers with up to 198 tons of coal to Colliery #6, where it would be transferred to train 0317, the former 0390 recently upgraded to an EMD SD70MAC hauling 10 large hoppers with 330 tons of coal to the Midville Power Plant. It soon became apparent that 6 hoppers were two more than required and train 1918 was reduced to four hoppers and gearing was changed to 62:15 with a small increase in maximum speed.

Phase 13 would be connecting Plainston to Eastport and be made up of the Plainston North Subdivision and the Eastport South Subdivision. Eastport is located on the western side of the island and is surrounded by forests and lakes. It is known for its hunting and fishing and indeed this was the motivation for NVP to locate its headquarters in the region. Passenger and mail service was initiated with #2020, another EMD GP38-2 geared for speed at 60:17.

Laying the track for the Plainston North Subdivision would have the added benefit of providing Plainston Farms 3 and 4 with rail access to Plainston Feedlot and Co-op, which, on their own, would have been difficult to justify financially.

Rail service to Plainston Farms 3 and 4 was initiated. Productivity levels required that a seperate service be provided to each farm. EMD GP38-2's geared at 65:12 were used throughout. 2121 livestock and 2221 grain with 11 cars each served farm #3 and 2341 and 2421 with seven cars each, served farm #4. With the increased volumes at Plainston Feedlot and Plainston Co-op, those services each received an additional train as well, 2522 and 2622 respectively.
