i would like to apologise for that last post. people from hull get really narked because it was voted the worst place to live
by the way, back to
through the tube, how about some landmarks, such as westminster abbey (although that might be too hard) or the houses of parliament?

well unless somebody comes up with something that allows new buildings that wont be placed randomly in towns by the game, then HQs sound like a good idea.
how many graphics artist have you got?

It's a work of art. It doesn't have to have a functional purpose.

Could start with track but no trains and then build the trains in varying numbers to keep up with demand?
You could also give them shorter langths to do?

Its meant to be a replica, so one would expect trains to run on the same lines as the underground, and trains would be expected to be assigned to a line and stop at the same stations, dont you think?

Do you live in/around Hull? I used to live there, but am now in Beverley. It'd be cool to find some more local OpenTTD players, maybe even arrange a network game!
Anyhow, back on topic...
I imagine it will end up as a replica, getting more and more realistic as OpenTTD develops, with things like proper underground lines, proper Tube Stock, new stations, new sounds, maybe even so good that people visiting london can fire up our save and plan a route!

Having had a look at the map as it is today, i would say that, until the new map array allows signals in tunnels, it will not be a particularly functional game. That said, it does look very impressive. The long tunnels and bridges mean that there would be a lot of queues - and, until the cities grow somewhat to covermuch of the map, it won;t look much like London. On the same note, i'm not sure whether the maker of the map (jpmaster i believe) intentionally added trees - but they are covering most of the scenario - isn;t there a discussion going on about that at the moment?
It is probably now too late, but it would have been a nice idea to enhance the game by doing the different lines as different companies - using the Subsidaires patch.
Making the stations somewhat different would be good - every single station - and there are lots - looks exactly the same. Other than that, though, the project looks very good
Once the initial track layout is completed, it may be a good idea to run it on fast forward - with no human intervention for a long time - so as to allow the cities to expand. Other than that, everything seems to be proressing very well

instead of having no intervention, why not just let the trains run as soon as the track is finished, that way towns will grow a hell of A LOT faster.
it could even be aided by a temporary goods service or two, just until the towns grow. this could then be totally earased before public release of the save file.

Because of the inefficiency of it - the tunnels and bridges are very long - so there are huge gaps between signals. this encourages jams and very slow traffic - meaning the trainswill make far less profit than normal. Until the new map array is finished, and allows signals to be built inside tunnels, this problemwill remain
In addition, due to the large number of crossovers outside stations, the junctions will remain veryinefficient without redesign - which would make them less realistic, most probably - or without PBS - which would make it somewhat better.

You are entirely correct. We do intend to do a bit of research into the stopping patterns of trains before we 'let them loose' as it were. This is because, even though the Metropolitan Lines terminus is actually Aldgate, most trains stop at Moorgate or Baker Street as the termini, we want the stopping patterns as accurate as possible.
We also plan to place the depots exactly where they are on the actual London Underground system. Furthur-more, each line will have its own rolling stock as it does in real life..though East London Line shares D stock, but thats neither here nor there.

excellent. sounding better by the minute.
a word about depots: real depots have more than one shed, so hows about doubling up engine sheds in relation to depots in real life?
Posted: 31 May 2006 17:51
by Griff
Indeed yes, we may also download new graphics where the depots are longer.

Or, of course, you have a normal deot joined in, and several built on behind it to make it look more realistic...

never thought of that...
