Fantastic work, the smoke was a real suprise!
Is it my version of OTTD or is the smoke positions constantly at the bow/stern depending on the direction of travel something that will be fixed in a later version? I run v1.3.2

The smoke is a bug that shouldn't have been in the alpha. Oopsie
Current stable releases of OpenTTD don't provide enough control over smoke to make it look good for ships. This might be changed in future. What you're seeing is part of the work for that

Should this be read as "the devs are considering it/working on it", or "I'm just hoping it will happen someday"?

There's a partial patch for OpenTTD, and partial patch for nml. Both work, neither are finished.

Awesome.

I hope the improvements will be enough to finally make that feature practical!

Currently testing SQUID3, unable to download SQUID4 for another 2

months, in the meantime you'll probably cook up another SQUID (5/6?)
I'll try to do some work on my shipping AI in the meantime

UT 755, probably the most sold vessel design, medium PSV (Platform Supply Vessel), deck cargo, dry bulk and liquid bulk, some adapted to carry a few passengers, and some adapted to other Offshore Support duties (such as Oil Spill Recovery, Area Stand By and Rescue, ROV Survey Support, etc)
Generally the vessels of UT755 design is about 80 meters long, have 6-800m2 deck space with a strength between 2 and 5 T/m2
Most commonly they have 4-5 dry bulk tanks with a capacity of 30 - 50 T of cement each, and 8-10 liquid bulk tanks with a capacity of 1000bbl each. Some hold special tanks, such as tanks for Base Oils, Methanol, etc.
Design was developed by Ulstein Yards Design office in 1980's, but have since around mid '90's been freed for any yard to build without need for licensing rights. Ulstein released the design due to replacing it with a more modern design from their own yard, later Ulstein have been taken over by Rolls-Royce, and design have changed name and become somewhat modernized.
It is a very popular design in the offshore industry because it is well known stability and construction wise, and very flexible in solutions. I have myself worked on several UT 755 vessels.

Have considered these offshore supply vessels before. Squid design is 'done' and there isn't room for one in that set, but there may be another set in future where they fit.

Looking forward to it
Maybe make a specific UT755 in the meantime?
BTW I am working on an AI that will make FISH even more entertaining! a ShippingAI

I'll take it if you don't want it.

Almost all of them are either sailships of warships, FISH is focused on cargoships. (Though I saw a few examples of cargoships on the list)

The Castle Point Steamer seems to have wrong offset on some sprites (sorry, no screenshots). I noticed it when it tried to dock, and again sailing through a canal, it seems like it is trailing on shore side of the canal, or hovering above it, instead of sailing along it. It is most prominent when sailing NW-SE, but also slightly misaligned when sailing NE-SW. Doesn't seem to affect when sailing N-S or E-W This is from FISH FISH squid-alpha-3 (or FISH 0.9.2, I have them both loaded

)

I have 2 requests for the translation of FISH:
- I need the option to turn name suffixes into prefixes (e.g. turn "Stornoway Ferry" into "Bàta-aiseig Stornoway")
- Since I'm translating into Scottish Gaelic, I would like to translate the names as well - a lot of ships have Scottish names ("Bàta-aiseig Steòrnabhaigh")
Maybe we can have strings of the type "{STRING} Stornoway"? That would be less obscure for a translator than "{0:STRING} {1:STRING}"

I've discovered a couple of small bugs in squid alpha 5:
1. The hull of the Castle Point steamer looks a bit offset to the north-east.
2. Just before the Altamira goes away in 1970, graphics of new Altamiras show the Cadiz instead. See screenshot, 17 Oct. 1970.

Thank you for your fantastic work, Andy.
It appears that the latest nightly, r1468, no longer contains the Mount Blaze. Have you removed this ship from the set or is it going to make a comeback alongside the large hovercraft fast ferry that appears to be based on the Super-SR.N4 (400 passengers)?
I really like the HSC-Francisco-inspired concept of the Mount Blaze and have used it for quite a while already. That said, I think there is room left for an increase in acquisition and operating costs for that monster considering that the slightly bigger and faster Francisco cost
$100 million.
