@FooBar,

I like that, I may do that with a bill or two in my wallet. And it probably isn't illegal to do this in the USA. I see some bills here and there with a stamp for some site called 'where's george' or something like that. It's a site to track where the bill goes to. Plus they get marked when shops check them to be fakes or not.

My apologies. You've been added to the list.

But while you're here, you might as well check out the guideline draft and tell us what you think about it.

It seems pretty good, well compatible with my RV Set. However, I did think that the amount of busses were a bit overkill.

Because I started only one set of road vehicles (trams), it could be no problem for me. Stays circumstance what will tell other sets authors.

*Diggs up topic* :)

More than two weeks passed since I posted the draft guidelines. Because no real reasonable complaints were filed in that period of time, I think it's time to give these guidelines a more "official" status.

That means that I'd like to add the guidelines to the NewGRF Spec Wiki, so that they are easy accessible (and easy to find!). If nobody disagrees, I'll add it in the near future.

Please remember: these guidelines are guidelines and are absolutely no requirements.
Let us toast on a more compatible future, cheers!

"Guidelines" may be a bit strong.
Why not use the following title for the wiki?:

Road Vehicle ID Range Usage Recommended Guidelines

Note that "Recommended" is underlined for emphasis.
It is also a link in case anybody wishes to question the definition of "Recommended". 8)

Maybe even drop "guideline" in favour of "recommendation".

Something like:

Road Vehicle ID Recommendation

I like it.
Now to hear from the ones that count ... the coders that will be occasionally referring to it.

I really appreciate the info on which IDs are taken up by the original TTD vehicles. I am making a one-vehicle GRF as a learning project right now, and I will make sure that it is compatible with the original TTD vehicles (and Pikka's HOVs, since those are way cool.)

Once I do that (and a one locomotive GRF) I will start on my planned projects: an early US locomotive set (designed to be loaded on top of Pikka & DanMack's American Transition set and/or the US train set) and an American Road Vehicle set.

The American Road Vehicle Set will be non-compatible; i.e. a total replacement of the original TTD road vehicles. Now, if I understand this correctly, if I keep buses in bus slots, trucks in truck slots, etc. then someone can load another partial set on top of this and it will only replace the vehicles with the same IDs. Correct?
So if I (for example) keep the tram slots free, it will be compatible with Generic Trams (or a revision thereof that follows the suggested ID scheme.)

Not going to ask for sprites or coding help until I have done some of both myself and contributed a couple working GRFs (no gaurantee as to quality) to the community.

True

True, if the Generic Tram Set supports this scheme (which it currently doesn't, if I recall correctly).

Thanks for digging up this topic. That reminds me of putting this information in the NewGRF Wiki. Since nobody filed reasonable complaints, I think it's save to assume that nobody would mind if this proposal gets a little more official status.

Because no reasonable complaints were posted, I decided that time has come to add the recommendation to the NewGRF Spec Wiki. And that what I've done! :D
