I think the colours are fitting: Blackish -> Yellow Nice! :)

What about Tiger blue? Yes, I know I'm Mac addicted :)
Aqua interface buttons could be done easily in InterfaceBuilder (that a graphical GUI creator; just for all non-Macusers). Create the interface without button texts and then export it as jpeg or something else.

Apple's legal department would probably have something to say about that.

Well, I like the design, but I don't like the colours. I would prefer them to be grey (or at least, less bright), it would be more TTDish.

We aren't trying to be more ttdish, we are trying to break away.

OK, here's a slightly revised mockup. Tried to tone down the orange a bit - colours match more closely to what they are now.

I've been trying to think of ways to completely change the startup. So i thought maybe we could use icons more than buttons with names. Here's a small example.
Top row= "singple player", "multiplayer".
Second row= Difficulty level "easy", "medium", "hard", "custom" - which takes you to another window like now.

And, just for Novatlan, a OSX version :P I'm also a mac addict :D

I think the icons idea would only be confusing to the people who aren't familiar with TTD or OpenTTD.
And possibly even to those that are :P

You can place the icons on the buttons.

@joed: Yeah, Aqua rulez!!!!!

I really like joed's idea. The current OTT Menu is quite confusing, could be made better.
Why should an aqua look cause problems with Apple Corp.? Flyakite copies Mac OX X 1:1 and they've got no problems.

Game Options and Configure Patches should be in one Window. Singleplayer or Multiplayer should be an extra windows, displayed when you start OTT, so there could be menus with different options for SP and MP. Map Size should be located in a New Game Window.

But that's not my business. I don't even know how to code such menus :)

I think that the single player button will be erased, I don't use it and don't know for what it serves. I think to reorder the buttons thus:

Code: Select all

 New game Load game
 New scenario Load scenario
 [Temperate] [Sub-artic] [Sub-tropical] [Toyland]
     Multiplayer
 Game options Difficulty
 Configure patches Quit

I think there was some discussion of custom guis like in winamp 2.x.

I don't think the real-life screenshots is going to work....

Hmm, I think have changed my mind of this. I think we should stick with in game shots.

Are you serious? Single Player is all I have played. But I do think what someone suggested about integrating "game options" and "configure patches" together.

Yeah, there was a suggestion of having skins. But won't skins just change the colour, buttons and background?

Depends on the skinning method used. Some skinning methods (such as found in Windows) don't allow much customization, while others (such as used in Winamp 3 & 5) are fully customizeable.

I don't think he means erase single player mode from the game, just the button. When have you really clicked that button? You only click on the Multiplayer button, and then a menu pops up in another window. It seems pretty useless to me having the Single player button if you never press it, so it's just there to remind you that you will be playing alone.

I like the idea of icons instead of text in the menu, it would make it look nicer IMO, and maybe you could choose between a text menu and an icon one (although it shouldn't be necessary if the icons are properly done and describe the action of the button well).

The idea of real life screenshots is brilliant IMO, but I think the images should be more determinant. Like this one:
http://www.oxfam.org.uk/coolplanet/onth ... esert5.jpg
for the desert and this one:
http://www.wallpaper.net.au/wallpaper/l ... 00x600.jpg
for the arctic landscape.

I always have Single Player selected. Didn't realise you could play 'Single Player' using the 'Multiplayer' button - maybe 'multiplayer' should be called "network game" or something?

If I have time after work (it's only 10am now) I'd like to try a completely different way of structuring the splash screen. Also, I want to try to rework game play windows - which work very differently as they snap and need to be non intrusive.

Appreciate the feedback btw :)
