A network map of one MASSIVE rail network.

Ehm, I don't get it. Is this really something coming from OpenTTD? And if yes, what did you use for creating this shot?

It is not something that comes directly from OpenTTD. It is a map the OP made of his network with a third party paint program. See THIS THREAD for more details.

I was sick last weekend so I had lots of time on my hands. :) I started a german game, and ended up building long trains in a mixed cargo-passenger network. I also tried to get a semi-realistic feel (i.e. no crazy landlevelling, or weird junctions) to the whole thing .

1st pic is of the main junction. It basically is an X junction, but because its located between two of the biggest conurbations on the map, the steel mill and the oil refinery it sees heavy traffic. I can spend hours watching those 14-tile long trains snake their way through the junction.

2nd pic is of a town called Steinbrucken. Toghether with its suburbs it forms one of the big conurbations mentioned above. In this pic I like how the main line bends through town. In fact, the mainline would prove unable to handle all the traffic, so two bypasses were built: one through rural areas far away from town, forming one of the legs of the X in the junction pictured above. The other would prove to be another urban line, forming a key part of the Steinbrucken S-bahn. But here, it's only the 1950s and all is relatively quiet.

EDIT: Oops... on my screen my pics are slightly table breaking. Let me know if it's a problem.

It's a shame that the different tracktypes have such horrific graphics, the concept is sound but just ruined by the fact that it looks pretty poo...

Agreed. I won't use them until that area improves.

I'm not much of an eyecandy player, but yeah: the 120 km/h track does require getting used to, to put it mildly. Still, I'm more annoyed by the fact that with the DBset, 120 km/h with catenary doesn't seem to exist. And the 160 w/ catenary is horribly expensive (the pieces of track pictured would easily cost 1 million pounds to convert, and that's just two screens...). So I'm stuck with diesels, while the DB Set has an excellent selection of electric engines. Currently I'm trying to get at least my most important mainlines up to the 160 standard, which would help improve the looks, speed and capacity of my network. If only I had paid more attention to providing enough capacity to my passenger business, I would be much richer today...

After.

And yeah, I did manage to crash two trains in the process of reconstructing. Note to self: be very careful when rebuilding a station while it is in use.

I like it!

Looks like a long swim from Istanbul station to the city though! :P

It's joined to a bus stop, so the passengers actually magically teleport into the city. It's 1995! Anything is possible!

Hi guys, this is my first time sharing screenies... been playing TTD since forever and been following the forums for a while too..

I guess I just got inspired so I wanted to share some of my shots with you.

This has a turkish twist to it although I have absolutely no relation nor friend of that nationality... I just use Google translate for station and waypoint names. I did this because I took a heightmap from what I thought was parts of Turkey and put Turkish Town names.

Anyhoo, here are some shots.

Oh, I just also wanted to share something I tried for the first time. I usually don't do a lot of tracks like this but I'm concentrating so much on one part of the map that capacity was very low. Since the line went through the mountains, I couldn't do a 4 track layout. I decided to have 6 very long tunnels that go under the rather smallish mountains all the while keeping the original line.

Here is a before and after:

As city populations grow, I usually get a backlog at the stations, so this map was designed to handle any city growth.

I did run into program constraints, ending with 240 trains and 250 stations (68 towns seemed to fit well).

Last two. There's almost no part of the map which is not within a station's transportation range.

I just only have one question: Why? :) Why to use such a long track for such a short distance?

he tries his tracks to be more realistic, if you see in real life, that's how tracks around mountains are build otherwise trains would slow too much or would it be even impossible for them to reach top of the mountain

Ah, so it was meant for more realism. That makes sense!

Also because long trains would crawl at 1km/h.

Short and long trains meet at the main line.
This is my first attempt to build the tracks as they would be build in reality.
