What a heap! I don't miss my days of travelling on Northern 150s to/from school every day!

Instead I'm now on Voyagers, so not much better, although today's example (220018 working 1V45 0703 Manchester Piccadilly to Bristol Temple Meads) is particularly clean on the front, with no left over marks from the old Virgin badge.

Sadly the WiFi is so poor the picture won't attach!

Edit: Now with picture!

Was a level crossing accident in South Australia, Australia on New Years eve. A truck failed to stop at a level crossing that has warning lights flashing and a freight train collected it. Both train crews was killed and truck drive walked away with a few minor injuries. As can see by one of these images the truck driver would have a good view whats coming. Truck driver from Queensland where freight trains don't travel as fast. But where accident happened the freight trains can do 115 km per hour.

He should be in the ground, not the poor train crew who couldn't stop for him. Tragic.

Recently I had been to Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria for the 31st International Mathematical Competition for University Students. It was a small but lovely city. And I also went some trainspotting. Here is an EMU 31.000 departing from Blagoevgrad at 2024-08-06 1420 (local time UTC+03) to its destination Sofia. The train number is REG 50112. There are many graffitis. The video has been compressed a little to be uploaded on the forums.

This is the Japanese Twilight Express Mizukaze - a luxury sleeping-car excursion train operated by the West Japan Railway Company (JR West) and what you see here is one of the observation cars with an open balcony. There are two of them at each end of the train and the cab for the train driver is above the balcony, as in the Dutch "Koplooper" trains (although these commuter trains are a tiny bit less luxury, of course  )

Bit of a quick visit to the Bavarian Railway Museum in Nördlingen ... it's basically a bunch of tracks and sheds next to the (still in normal use) Nördlingen station. You can just wander around as you like and look at everything currently parked anywhere accessible. And then there's even more stuff parked sorta nearby but less accessible. Good enough to sorta see but not in detail.

Interesting they don't just do the "usual" historic tourist trains but also for example provide cargo service with some of their diesel engines for nearby industries. Very much a working railway club that's also a museum and maintains some track and does some passenger and freight service ... ^^#

Nördlingen is a bit of a tourist destination anyway (preserved historical city in a really nice landscape) but if you're into trains it's definitely a nice bonus ;)

The Old and the new. The 1st train you see is called a V-Set and these are being scrapped in coming years as they old. The next train you see if the video is known as a D-Set also called a Mariyung which is aboriginal for Emu. This will replace the V-Sets as crews are trained to use them.

Cool ;) If you are into that sorta thing; Munich itself isn't much of a railway Mecca as such (although of course there's plenty of other nice things here); but it does have the Verkehrsmuseum (transportation museum; also has cars etc.) that's a branch of the Deutsche Museum. Otherwise there's the Deutsche Bahn Museum in Nuremberg nearby and then yeah definitely Nördlingen. Both Nördlingen and Nuremberg are a bit of a day trip from Munich of course but as both cities are quite nice they are worth visiting anyway.

There's also a bunch of heritage railways in the area if that's your cup of tea. Nördlingen sometimes does steam train journeys to Munich actually ^^#

Of course you can also just go watch trains in the natural environment in and around Munich. I was actually at the marshalling yard last Sunday (I'm sure I've posted some pics from there before):

Nice seeing you guys putting videos and photos here to see what things are like in your countries. Usually if do a search on internet for trains of countries usually show a tourist point of view. But here is far better as we get a train watchers point of view. So much better.

Here a few videos I took past few days.
