Here's my current project, playing 0.3.1 with the big maps, although I've spent my entire working mostly just on this one junction and it's outlets.

I started a new game with 'mountainous' terrain. It's my first real attempt to manage on this terrain, and it's not easy. I'm playing with some 'build while paused' so that I can build a nice big steam network. These screens were taken just after I cleared my loan (was up to £500,000 at one stage!).
Edit: Sorry, they're all 800x600, so you'll have to click on them to see.

- Nice junction! I used the tunnel to avoid having to move lots of earth or make trains go up big gradients.

- The current busiest area of the map. Industries seem to have clustered around low land. Sinningbury Valley can successfully handle 2 trains simultaneously.

- Our engineers needed a lot of ingenuity for the first line. The double-headed A4s have been running for nearly 4 years now.

- Company HQ (soon to be upgraded, we hear) in a very scenic location! Below, a single wood train is all that occupies the high capacity coastal line.
