I think it looks good too.

Yes you do. You have to get it in before you can separate the units. Especially important with perma-couple sets. The highlighted area on the following photo represents a medium-sized depot, including sheds (1:5000, look at the road for scale).

Must be passenger-train sheds. Obviously the railyards have to be big enough to take in the whole train at once, but I wouldn't expect them to be all covered over. What is that one used for?

Well, that Largedepot thingy which was on my todo list, i'd like it if depot's are more station-like, or actually more like a "rangeerterrein" (don't know what's it in englis, but it's the place where trains are 'stored' for later use).
The idea really could become useful if you would have to store trains for later use, rather than just selling them and rebuying them later on.
But i guess these idea's can all just be forwarded to /dev/null, because they'll probably be impossible

This one is home to lots of passenger DMUs, and a number of freight-hauling locos and cars. Not to mention a couple of shunters, and a snowplough

"Sidings" "Sheds" are the only words I can think of. Also "Marshalling Yard", but thats more where wagons are put onto different trains.

How about "switching yard"

that's what i looked for.
and if the depot will be a bit wider, it's also possible to make multi track depots.

Yup, I noticed that, and that's what I'm working on at the moment. It's easier said than done though, but it'll be done eventually.

Just to give you an idea how big depots really are...
First example would be the depot where I am working at, the Bw Plochingen, which would be the heart of the local commuter (we call it S-Bahn) train network for the german town Stuttgart.
The train garage itself has 5 tracks, each track can fit 2 units of the BR 420/423/425. Two units have a lenght of 134,8 metres, the bulding itself is a bit longer. Right beside the garage we have a building which contains all the bureaus, cantina, toilets, information rooms, and so on.
I didn't even mention all the other tracks outside, the whole area is pretty large.
Our munich counterpart is even larger: They have 6 (or was it 5?) tracks which can hold up 3 units of the trains I mentioned above, lenght would be 202,2 metres now.
Now the two depots I mentioned yet are small compared to the ICE depot Hamburg-Eidelstedt:
The garage has 5 tracks, each one can hold up a single ICE 1 or two ICE 2 or ICE 3 trains, lenght would be about 400 metres. And of course there is a large number of tracks on the outside.
I think it is impossible with such small maps to create a really decent depot in TTD right now. If you want to do the complet area, then it would be at least as large as most of the larger stations which our junctionary gurus like Louie or Raichase showed off in the screenshots thread.
If you want some pics, I might be able to provide you with some of the depots I mentioned above....

you just missed the
E off the end of my name. I have actually tried to model a working depot area in TTD, didnt have much luck with it though unfortunately. But after reading this i may give it another go.

Damn, I thought I would write it wrong, sorry about that
Anyways, I just attached a picture of two air photos:
The left one would be Frankfurt am Main main station, one of the largest german passanger stations.
The right one actually shows a part of the Hamburg-Eidelstedt ICE depot.
The scale is a bit off, but you should be able to get a good idea to compare them.

Here's a little file for you to play with. Only two rotations are done, as matching up the edges is pretty hard, but this is basically to make mockup shots with, to see how good it could look.

Well, if you like that sort of thing, I think it looks about exactly the way it ought to.

Only problem i can think of, is that there is a set limit to the number of depots available, which kinda bums.
Also any chance of you drawing a modern depot?
