I know what he meant, my post was just to show that people should be a bit more specific.

32bpp and "fullzoom" is by concept two fundamentally different things. But there's a bunch of people who just don't distinguish that properly as there are some 32bpp sprites for a "fullzoom" patch, but no 8bpp "fullzoom" sprites exist anywhere.

Vision wise, I think 2.0 should put focus on gameplay. As it is now OpenTTD is a great transportation sandbox, but it doesn't come with any defined challenges for new and old players.

I honestly think that any challenge in OpenTTD should be set by yourself, as a goal for the game.

- make it more accessible
This could mean anything from improved GUI to an Android port. Having OpenGFX and OpenSFX is already a big step for accessibility because the TTD files are no longer needed and thus more people are able to play the game.
- make it more fun
This could mean anything from building underground to cargo distribution and timetable separation.

new economic model - different industry/(deliver/vehicle/maintenance) prices/production in different times. road vehicles and ships available since 1700. different types of road a railroad (differing in maximum speed, introduction year and cost of construction and maintenance). and town zones to enable more interesting cities

This everything can be introduced via GRFs.

My main ideas are

Viewport Rotation, not necessarily 3d, just a different viewpoint.
Sandbox mode, not just scenario editor, but the ability to build transport systems without financial restriction.

I'd say what is needed is for OTTD to be more newbie friendly. Since this is a game made by the players of the game, the more players there are, the better the game will be. :) The fact that you don't need the original datafiles anymore makes this the perfect time to think about expanding the playerbase. Right now, for newbies, the game must seem utterly pointless - I've got problems explaining the fun to others. I think that means a few things:
  • A clearer, more consistent GUI. Right now settings that would seem logical to be together are spread across various menus. (Game options, advanced settings, difficulty, game creation.)
  • An interactive tutorial.
  • Sciptable scenarios, that allow for "easy gratification". Getting some goals, fulfilling them, getting new ones, etc.
  • Make multiplayer more enjoyable. I think infrastructure sharing is a good way for doing this, but some changes in the economy might be necessary to make it interesting to compete with established companies. (sorry, nothing concrete)
Someone new to this game should be able to play it, have fun, and fall in love with it. I think in terms of playability this is the best open source games there is, but there's room for improvement.

Something I think would be neat would be scenario conditions similar to Roller Coaster Tycoon's: "Do x and unlock the next scenario" In some cases it could be "Transport W units of X to Y before Z" and in others it could be "achieve a company value of X before Y" and possibly even "Get X amount of monies before company Y" though that would require a reasonably smart AI to be included.
"Why were you late?"
"There was a train."
