and how did we get back off subject? we were back on the subject of the thread before this. This is a thread about what we want in multiplayer games, not netiquette. can we can back on subject an cease all this bickering about whats polite and whats not? or if you must continue to bicker, create a different thread?

anyway, one think that might draw in lots of players is something more unique. such as a server which starts in the 1800's or uses X NewGRF. but of course, if the server uses too many NewGRFs then it could do the opposite, and repulse players.

I pared my server games down to only NARS 2.0, eGRVTS, PBI and ISR 8.0. I actually had somebody connect to my game last night!! :D
They didn't stay long enough to build anything, or even say Hello, but it's a start. :?

actually i can think of something i would like to see in multiplayer games: servers being able to kick clients if they join with the default nick name "Player", and that _before_ they download the map. Yes, server admins can rename clients (at least in the nightlies) but that is more useful if people join with offensive nicks. at least they already have their nick set in the config :-P.
currently i use ap+ (autopilot) to kick clients who's nick contains "player" of any form, however by then they have already downloaded the map, and paused the game.

Why not just have OTTD force people to enter a different name client side, and refuse to join any servers if they haven't set a name? Or couldn't the rename be done through automated means?

dihedral had a script, which renamed every "Player". But now everyone will bekicked, if he has Player as name ;)
Well some people were confused because suddendly they were called Hans or Peter :D
What about an window, which appears if you press the mutliplayer-button the first time and wants you to enter a name?
So noone will ever have the Player-name ;) instead they call themselves "Player".
Then they could be kicked.
