Thanks again for the feedback.
I've updated the web site to show 44x44, 32x32, 28x28 and 22x22 pixel icons. I would prefer the 28x28 pixels icons for in game.
Also added a new icon for "stations". Comments?
Any comments on the new "finance" icon? In my first post in this thread I had "coins". Which do people prefer?

yeah 28 pixels is best size-wise IMO.
i wouldn't feel the need to zoom them in any more or less than that. although 32 is also not wrong.
and i see the 32 and 28px ones are just HTML resized images

but thats ok.
How do you think these all might work with rollovers, or are you working on that?

They all do have rollovers. Does it not work for you?
I just did the HTML resize so I didn't have to export that many icons - with rollover states.
I know 32px is an icon standard, but what about 28? and isn't 48px a better standard than 44px?

No worky here either.
/me pokes at source.
I think this just might be the cause of at least one problem:
Code: Select all
<script type="text/javascript" src="file:///Users/james/Library/..."></script>
!!^^^^!!

I'm just about to upload an updated HTML. Safari does the rollovers with no problem - hence I thought it was ok. In GoLive it automatically uses the GoLive library and no imbed the JS into the HTML. Seem so simple now!
Also added another icon

(and a few minor changes to others)

I like 28x28 icons, I think their size will be optimal for the gameplay and UI

ok now it works
ok opinions, i think we need a colour pallet, less candy colours, more like TTD colours.
other idea is to have the "pre-rollover" colour in greyscale. once rolled over it goes coloured with black border, then once clicked the background button changes.
i think its to colourfull for some reason.
the graph, i also think needs a boundary it is open, i would sugest a pie graph, but i guess we don't have pie graphs, its a hard one to do.
then finally i think the visual density of the icons should be balanced, but this can be done later, its not an issue that needs to be solved now. some just seem very overwhelming, while others seem underwhelming visually. this is why i suggest a desaturated normal state (to remove colour from the visual density equation)
last observation
your icons seem to has white as a colour in the gradient, whereas TTD has colour (i.e. red) - dark colour (i.e. dark red). i think it is visually more easy on the eyes.
not trying to turn them into TTD clones, but observing some of the sucessfull visual devices and balancing that the TTD artist did, and seeing how it could help here.
keep up the awsome work.
the webpage is working really well.

OK, it's after 1am and I'm tired. Lucky got tomorrow (today) off work!
Uploaded new icons to the web site. I deleted the 22x22 pixel ones, and introduced a new set (version 3.1) based on Alltakens comments.
Thanks Alltaken btw for your comments. You were completely right with the icons being too "colourful" and not having enough contrast. All things I knew, but just needed someone to point it out. lol.
I've tried to fix all the colours in the new lot. Let me know what you think, and having the B&W and turn colour on rollover. Was that what you meant?
OK, going to bed, had enough

You can't download it to play it, it is work in progress.
However, you can download the gifs and have fun creating desktop wallpaper out of them.
Also please edit your signature, english only please.

I've tweaked the icons a little more (see signature for link).
The "sold" sign I was trying to use for the landscaping button, but it doesn't really relate. Might be able to use it for the "purchase land" icon.
Also, there's a HELL of A LOT of icons to do, not only the ones in the tool bar, but icons for close, pin, expand/contract, and all the sub tools (like construction of roads, rail etc). I'm not asking for help, just that this is going to take a VERY long time.... MAybe I could do placeholders for them all, does someone want to give me a list of all the icons I need to do?

Very nice icons. Keep up the good work!
I also like your mockups of the interface. It could use a facelift imho.
I think there is a list of unmade icons on the wiki btw.

I've got A LOT more icons now, still a few to go.
So now might be a good idea to get the latest feedback.
I need to redo "landscaping", and need to add "ship", "dock" and "airport". Then I can get started on the sub icons
Also, the wiki I did for the icons is out of date - but will fix once all the icons are done.

*revives topic*
I like the icons a lot.
but I noticed your GUI mockups...

let me be blunt: I think it is absolutely terrible >_>
Too curvy, too blurry, too flat.
I think graphics in the style of windows media player 11/office 2007 would look very nice for the GUI. I could make them, if you wanted.

You mean something like this?
I think I'll preffer the old one... Personally I like windows's style, but many people don't. I think the old one is more "neutral"...

Yes, definately something like it, but it could still be better

Personally, I don't like the designs.. But I do like where this whole thing is going .. Think the best thing is to keep coming up while a range of designs and let people decide which they like, then create a patch and let me use it... then try and get it in the main game
