I prefer cropped as it keeps a sense of scale.

I also think cropped would be better.

Ok, well there's definitely a problem here (unless you agree to the reuse of those sprites). Someone ought to sort this out and I guess I'm going to have to try.
Yes, I agree there is a problem with some of these sprites.

I'd suggest 'inside cropping', ie. don't scale down, but shorten the boats at selected places in-line to give both an overview and a hint about the mastodont size of them.

no, that would make the ship look really tight, squeezed together and wouldn't give an idea of the length.
Maybe the ideal solution would be so resize all ships with the same ratio, so the difference would still be visible, but that would lead to some very small ships, so you wouldn't see any details...

Personally I prefer cropped as well. As Peter said, gives a good idea of size

Cropped; I like AndersI's "inside cropping" idea.

I prefer cropped inside with a diagonal line, like in grfs with livery override.

Nice project... as for the international list, what you think about GTS FinnJet? I think it's one of the most remarkable ferries of all time. Of course you cannot use it as a ferry, but with it's 1600 passenger capacity (had space for 400 cars on car decks, which could be remapped as mail or goods, as it mostly shipped trucks and their drivers.) and 33 knots travel speed is remarkable on it's time as it was introduced in 1976. Mainly it traveled between Travemünde, Germany and Helsinki, Finland.
and why it is called GTS? as it was Gas Turbine Ship. Powered by dual Gas Turbines by Pratt & Whittney. (modified design from engines which were used in DC-8 jet.) 77,000 horse power.
and yes, it was darn expensive to ran. so, make the running costs quite high.

and it was scrapped this summer, so lifetime could be 32 years, which fits nicely to game.
Some info at wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GTS_Finnjet
and more info and lot's of pictures in original company colors here:
http://www.simplonpc.co.uk/Finnjet.html
(Original colors were white and dark blue. these of course could be the 2 company colors in game.)

May I suggest something from NEL lines?
Especially these 2:
1.
2. Sappho. Built in 1966, scrapped in 2004. Details and photos here:

EDIT:
An amazing collection of ship photos and videos here:

Playing a lot with Island maps and pre 1920, I really looking foreward to the release of this promising set.
What about of replacing obsolet models with newer ones of the same type, like it is done with the locos in NARS2?
I also think ships should be a little bit faster (regardless speed of the prototyp) and give them more capacity, of coures, but since the niche of watertransport depends pretty much on the used trainset(s), I would recomend making the shipset somewhat adjustible by variables (like the shiptool or maybe something like the regearing patch).
Refitcost (unless with special ships like tankers or reefers) should be rather low, giving a greater flexibility in the use of ships (tramp steamer). Is it possible to have ships carrying different cargos at once?
I found a couple of 1:250 scale card models, representing interesting prototyps, worth to be draw for OTTD/TTP.
Just some examples for inspiration, they got a lot more that these:

Nice! How about a smaller one for around 1800?

the current one would actually do fine, just introduce it earlier

Hey!
I have a problem with starting and loading a game! When I click on saved game or new game TTD crashes! Seems like problem is in this set grf and bikka's av8 grf, but this Ill post right thread!

I know its work in progress, so maybe some coments could be helpfull.
Here is my expierience with the set so far. (Using NARS2, starting 1830with a new map I had no problems with the set so far)
The Clipper is pretty nice, but running cost is quite high, it should be refitable to more cargos. I think.
The Paddle Steamer is hopelessly slow. The narrowboat comes much to late in the game, 40 years earlier it would be of great use if you got some rivers on the map, running cost is to high and it should be refitable to allmost all cargos.
I would say the small Cargo Vessel is a to small, and to expensiv to run too. The bigger Cargo Vessels (really big - really cool!) look a little bit slim and much to modern for the time the are introduced.
I guess for speed, costs and capacity of the ships everybody got a different taste. The niche for ships in the transport system depends on the Railwayset you play with so a inbuild modifier might be a good idea.
Around 1800-1850, another sailing cargo ship would be nice. A barque or brig, somewhat slower then the clipper, but more capacity and cheaper to run. (100-150t, 17mph, later to be replaced by a small cargo vessel). Just a thought.

Hey I would like to help out with this project! I am an art student, some graphic arts experience, never done isometric art, but I'm a lifelong TTD player and I'd like to help put some 'oomph' into the shipset.
I haven't read all 17 pages of this thread yet, but I was thinking that we could cover all eras - 1700 - today (maybe not specifically in the "2cc" grf set, tho). Even have updated historic canal grfs that change over time? I don't know if this is possible, since I have zero programming knowledge. The reason I mention this is because there are some other modders who are working on pre-1900 sets - ie,
eGRVTSand the
Early Rail UKRS.

Hi zilfondel..
You can look here to how to draw sprites for 8bpp and 32bpp and learn a bit more how NewGRF works..
