Post by Bilbo »

Yes, I am going to raise back from the grave and I am going to update it :). I've just done that.

So, the updated version for 19000 is in first post.
Functionality is the same, but the patch was updated to reflect major changes in GUI code.

Also, since the new GUI system automatically resizes the widgets according to their contents, there are no longer any problems with text overflowing the combobox even with the version here with much larger limits.

I have also posted updated version to flyspray with "reasonable" limits (8K max size instead of 1M max size)
If you need something, do it yourself or it will be never done.

My patches: Extra large maps (1048576 high, 1048576 wide) (FS#1059), Vehicle + Town + Industry console commands (FS#1060), few minor patches (FS#2820, FS#1521, FS#2837, FS#2843), AI debugging facility

Other: Very large ships NewGRF, Bilbo's multiplayer patch pack v5 (for OpenTTD 0.7.3)

Since the "no plane crash" function was added to trunk before 19000, then yes, there is that feature :)

No i am not talking about auto renew for vehicles that are old. I am talking about auto replace where you can select other vehicles.

And thats what Im talking about, if you dont have enough money you can Auto Replace\Renew vehicles, the same thing happens to me in any version\nightly of openttd

I saw, some time earlier in this thread it was mentioned that when X and Y coordinates gets squared to calculate the manhattan distance that can cause overflow unless 64 bit integers are used. I see that this has been fixed in OpenTTD, but what about all AIs? I don't know how big the integers are in squirrel, but probably they are 32 bit by default. This is something that could cause problems and should probably be investigated further before trunk merge.

Edit: Also NewGRFs how large integers do they use, and could they possible calculate the manhattan distance?

Check the topmost part of squirrel.h, you can see the types used internally by Squirrel there.

Btw yes, 32 bit squirrel uses 32 bit int by default (unless it is set differently in OTTD which I doubt, but I didn't check that).

Post by Bilbo »

X and Y coordinates are squared to calculate euclidean distance. For manattan distance you just sum the cooordinate differences.

When I started writing first version of this patch, there was no NoAI, so there were no similar problems. The overflow occured sooner, because it have overflown in internal cordinates, which have better precision than tile (I think these coordinates have precision of 1/16th of a tile), because you need also to store exact position of train "inside" the tile. I think AI's does not have means to access these precise coordinates, it have only tile numbers.

Problematic could be for example AIMap::DistanceSquare - it return squared distance, so map sizes larger than 32K would cause trouble ....

There are two versions of the patch, one posted on flypray with "reasonable limits" as requested by dev (max 4M tiles, max map size 8K) and this "less limited" version (max 64M tiles, max map size 1M - maximum you can have while still being able to run on 32bit architectures and at top sizes it is quite slow even on fastest currenty available computers). The point is, once this gets into trunk, you can change both of the limits by merely changing two constants and recompile.

I think reasonable limits lie somewhere between - perhaps 8M map tiles maximum and 32K max map size, where things should work still fine (even if noAI does this calculation manually inside its code) and also reasonably fast on modern PC's. AI's not using euclidean distance should work fine even with the 1M map size :), though when (if) this gets in trunk, it will be the devs who will set the default limits. Unless they've changed their mind over last year or so, we can expect same maximal number of tiles, but larger maximal size of map in one dimension, so we'll get extra noodly sizes like 4K x 1K and 8K x 512. Could be nice for maps like Chile and Italia... :)

The most speed-limiting function at large map sizes is currently the tile-loop, even at current maximum 4M tiles and decent CPU (core 2 Duo) it eats about 12% of your CPU, at 64M it will be about 200% of your cpu, which mean your CPU is not fast enough and the game will run with reduced speed ....

Solution would be to rewrite the tile loop to either use more CPU cores (not easy), use GPU (even harder) or be more effective even when single threaded (I looked briefly at the code and there is nothing that you can easily simplify to speed things up, so this would be also pretty hard). Or change the tile loop mechanism to be run less often, but that would change the game ...

Or perhaps change the order in which the tiles are processed. Now it processes one tile and then skips to tile 16 positions later, which is quite unfriendly to CPU cache.
If you need something, do it yourself or it will be never done.

Problem is that we can't rely on future computers being able to deal with - processor speeds aren't going up because it's the number of cores that's increasing (except hyperthreading). Of course OpenTTD doesn't do dual-core.

Bilbo could you update the patch to the newest revision 19400+ please?

I tried to compile today with 19416 and i got a compiling error.

Then i tried 19000, that worked without problems, but somehow i can't start the game with the patch apllied.

Download my binary and extract it to a folder. Then start openttd.exe, making sure you have the data files.

I am also having a probnlem with win7 and Openttd. The game will crash and say i am out of memory despite my system having 12 gig. I am running Bilbo large maps on 4096x8192 map I assume the reason for the crash is it a 32 bit and not 64
