Not funny - essential! We've got to have a little ferry like that ;) Even really early in the game - Zephyris' horses can go across on one! (Or we can make it look like they do anyway - proper vehicle ferries aren't actually possible).

I can't help feeling that you are going for vessels that are just too small. Small vessels are great because some of the current ones are too large but something more substantial than a ro-ro ferry like the one Purno posted are just too small in my opinion for a game such as TTD where passenger volumes just go mental later on in the game.

I think Purno is on to something with the little ones - but we can have big ferries too. For example, these from Seattle (I went on some of these once):

350 passengers, 45 mph, 7200 horsepower
http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/your_ws ... ssel_id=92

546 passengers
http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/your_ws ... ssel_id=62

2500 passengers
http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/your_ws ... ssel_id=13

Big enough for ya? ;)

If the set includes my suggestion of capacity multiplier you could be looking at 5000 or 7500 passengers...

cheers,

Andy

I have a little request to be added, the Condor ferries that run from where I am.

I've even got a link to the page with the details. Here

I don't expect them to be added, but it would be nice.

I wasn't saying only do big ships, more don't do tiny ships. Anything smaller than 50 passengers I think would be pointless in this game in my opinion given the slow speed of ferries.

We can do a little bit of dibbling to make sure the speed / cost / capacity are balanced for gameplay. Depends how you play, but I think some players would find a ferry useful as an alternative to bus routes. How about Plentingford, Gendhill and Treningwell in this map? Just how big is Treningwell going to get on that little island? :P

I think a cheap 35 passenger ferry with a not-too-slooooooow speed might be really handy for situations like this - you get the station rating decay bonus for ships, and no infrastructure costs. Could be neat?

EDIT - I'm assuming there is an extended set using OTTD engine pool, so we don't have to worry about using up scarce IDs - small ferries should only be in such an extended set.

cheers,

Andy

Well true, in that scenario, a small ship would be good... :P

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't trying to be a party pooper more a devil's advocate in questioning whether a small ship would be worthwhile.

Not all ferries are slow.
Have a look at the Condor ferries link I put in, it's got the details for all of them there, they're actually fairly quick

But still in the scheme of things they are slow, in the early years too when passenger carrying vessels would be viable there were no high speed catamarans like those used on fast ferry services today.

What about this. Is it big enough?

Anyways, how many ShipIDs do we have in OpenTTD now?
Up to 65535 vehicles in game (total) with no restrictions of number of vehicles of a particular type - the vehicleID in action0, 3 and 4 is now an extended byte.

Ameecher, I don't see what's wrong with adding a very small ship and thus offering variation, as we got plenty of ShipIDs anyways.

Ameecher's got a point: if we include small ships they've got to be useful. But I think that just means balancing the stats right for gameplay.

Small ships are like the early trams in GRVTS, or early narrow gauge in CanSet: they're slow and low capacity, but the running costs mean you make money with them, and they're cheap to buy.

Apart from Gameplay, there's also Realism. Some players like realism and would use such a small boat just as eye candy.

Ha, I see your 'Eye Candy Realism' and raise it with 'Economic Realism' Some players don't like vehicles that just don't make any money

(But yes, I do agree with you Purno)

True, there are a lot of playing styles. Fortunately we got a lot of ShipIDs to satisfy them all.

Two other things:

- How many ShipIDs do we have for TTDPatch? I assume we want to make a TTDPatch compatible version too?

- If a passenger ship is drawn, I shall make a banner. :))

There are 11. I would say because there are so few then you might as well make a ttdpatch compatible version, but it would be very small in comparison...

Yeah, I guess we just need to disable everything except the first 11 ShipIDs, which means the first 11 ShipIDs will be reserved for ships we want in TTDpatch. Or do I guess incorrect?

Only 11 ships would be very easy to recode completely, I would be inclined to code them as essentially separate sets but within one grf file. That would keep things like the default order in the buy menu logical with relatively little effort...
