For my contribution I wish to propose the MultiPede.
A MultiPede is modular wherein the modules are commonly referred to as pedes.
A pede is in itself modular as it is readily adaptable to any cargo/passenger configuration.
A pede is in itself further modular as it requires only one singular bogie that can be of any configuration:
- Standard Rail
- Narrow Gauge Rail
- Or any other gauge rail one can dream of
- Monorail
- Mag-Lev
- Road
- Water Flotation device
- Aeronautical Propulsion Device
- Interplanetary Propulsion Device
Pedes are assembled into multipede units (Hence the name MultiPede).
For the assembly challenged there are two standard configurations:
- 100 unit Centipedes for the low traffic lines.
- 1000 unit Millipedes for those requiring higher faster more aggressive capacities.
MultiPedes are quite maneuverable thus enabling the use of tight track configurations and very steep slopes.
As an added benefit for those prone to stepping upon and squashing their multipedes, squashed multipedes are considered to be green (an ugly yellowish shade of green, but green nonetheless) and are readily compostable for use as fertilizer in the gardens where new multipedes are produced.

Thank you for this very interesting idea but for this set I seek something that just looks weird, the way how things are going to work is pretty much set... Such a "pede" would be something like an extra engine... regardless if it would even be possible in OpenTTD (which it would probably not I think though I am no expert on that), I want bonus engines that just look ÜBER-weird (absurdly weird so it cannot even be meant seriously) but work just like normal engines.

As for something special, I plan an universal engine that is able to access all rail types so usage of all 3 rail types is without any issues/manual autoreplacing pain in the butt... And perhaps something else like universal wagon so that you can use one wagon and refit it to any cargo available. Again, just small things that are super useful but nothing absolutely revolutionary or just plain insane - as for way how things work, everything is aimed to have very good gameplay reasons.

I guess my submission was a bit too nuts for NUTS.
Actually, the module concept already exists in TTDX type games in the form of EMU/DMUs wherein the lead module that contains the driver's cabin and is coded as the engine. The rest is merely graphical representation. 8)

Just finished an early version of the possibly most nutty train of the set... It should be an extra engine that has somewhat weak stats so it is not effective to use it. The reason for usage has to be it's look/weirdness...
The rest of the (serious) trains in the set should be more sane.. :)

Here goes the one and only: SLUG TRAIN (organic)

it is missing many things and features yet, but gives you a good idea of how do I mean it...

It looks like a snail.

No, snails have shells. It looks like a slug.

Maybe the shell could be a larger wagon with increased capacity, but only one is allowed per train.

Shell would be truly awesome but the sprites would need to be gigantic so I decided to make just a slug

In some languages, that is also called a snail, even if it doesn't have a shell.

I Dutch we call 'em "naked snails"

Anyways, I like the sprites. Should come with it's own railtype: a slimy trail. :D

This is going to end in Garden-TT isn't it? Complete with it's own plant/vegetable based industries, flies for planes and ants/spiders/beetles for RVs.

At least it would make a good Toyland Replacement Landscape

Rail type is yet unknown but monorail is very likely to be the one

How about including some folkkore. The Flying Dutchman could do as a ship. The Silver Arrow could do as a train.

That visual idea is not yet dead :P I will see what I can do with a pede...

As a pede I imagine this caterpillarish thingy from cnc3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mjcfh1en0ss ... a disadvatage is going to be that it is going to be a somewhat levitating caterpillar, because the "legs" will not move

Why not? Animate it ;-)

It means drawing a bit more, but feasible and possibly not that bad, if you use layered images.
See http://hg.openttdcoop.org/nml/raw-file/ ... icles-vars (motion_counter) respectively http://newgrf-specs.tt-wiki.net/wiki/Va ... 2/Vehicles (tick_counter, var 0x97)

That youtube presentation is spot on to my suggestion and note that the pedes have wheels instead of legs. Planetmaker's animation suggestion might be fun but it might be a bit too much, hence my suggestion of bogies instead of legs. The challenge actually would be the size of each pede. There might be issues with bounding boxes etc. and getting the pedes to chain together without spaces in between. :)

How's about one of these:

Would be a fun train for the brewery runs in some of the new industry sets.

What about a steam maglev express train, introduced in 1875??? :D
