Most often it's not a good idea to try to solve social problems by means of technical solutions. The moderators do a good job and spam is mostly quickly removed and offensive users reminded of the standards which are expected of this community (and in bad cases forcefully so, but manually). IMO it'd be bad to limit all the hundrets of 'good' users for the sake of the random annoying person. Sometimes even those learn the rules when properly told so.

Send them a PM. so long as it isnt "OMG GTFO mah forum!"

if you send them something like "Hi, I see you're passionate about Locomotion, but behaviour such as double posting and bumping old topics isnt something we do here. people will be happy to help you, and maybe you can learn some new things if you follow the forum rules."

No, we don't encourage policing by normal members. Report the posts and let the modetators deal with it.

I think in response to "point the offenders at the rules and wait for the admins". it seems that the usual offenders click the link, see no downloads and move on without reading a word.

~shrug~ I usually report the post and ignore it going on with my day.



I just thought there might be an easier (automated) way to help out the moderators with some of the "touble" new members and save them some time.
I also was not sure if this is a problem outside the Locomotion section.

If it is a not a feature of the current board software, there is probably not a real reason to "hack" it.

I think we all are on the same page at the moment and agree that whats best on some "other forums" , is not always whats best here.

I'm afraid any tool that makes a moderator's life easier limits freedom.

And honestly, this is an issue. In the public, you're encouraged to act if something happens. Here, you're encouraged to idly watch and do nothing. Clearly, members must be able to speak their mind and must be able to (always in a polite manner) point a newcomer in the right direction. This is not backseat moderating.

Fine line there, Chrill: in public you are allowed to say something but not by PM. We real mods cannot check PM's we can however check public reactions. And there is always the Report button in public sections.

I understand this, but I have to point out something to a few moderators, Hyro in particular. It feels to me, and I may be wrong and in that case I apologise, that you mistrust everyone by default. You have an approach to your appointment here that I disagree with. It feels as though you assume we are all bound to go berserk unless you personally restrain us.

You need to loosen up a little, let the members of the forum help themselves to as much extent as possible. Moderators should not micro-manage a forum, they should only step in when things get out of hand. From experience, I find that you have a tendency to be a bit too harsh.

All I am trying to say is, we members are not as evil as we seem. We slowly learn from mistakes and these forums are neater today than what they were maybe one or two years ago.

As far as I understand, you can do so to PMs as well nowadays

I think they guy who is checking the reports, is getting crazy, because i am almost certain there have been made around 25 this day.

To be fair, and I'm not afraid to say it, almost all of what Hyro does is good, beneficial for the forums and well-reasoned. All too often there are problems that need addressing by quick, sharp actions. When a topic is getting out of hand with flaming, its often Hyro that steps in to sort it out. Or tell someone to shut up if they're being blatantly annoying. Or clear out half a page's threads when flaming starts.

I'd agree with all of this except for "well-reasoned". All too often Hyro's "well-reasoning" involves "because I'm the moderator, and I say so".

Hyro's a good moderator, but Chrill has succinctly put into that post what I've been trying to say for a few months and have just been derided for.

If I come across like that I blame misperception. People who know me in real life know the opposite is true. I just don't like immature behaviour by adults.
