It will probably not be "the new" title game. Instead the winner of this competition is intended to be used as the title game for the 1.0 series. (look at the title of this thread and Rubidiums first post) The nightlies will most likely still keep the old title game.
Regarding jumping: I think that if jumping was allowed that would easily lead to bigger maps which increase the file size, and most of you can probably understand that this is not wanted for something that will be downloaded many many times. Also a bigger title game will increase the startup time of OpenTTD.

Well, this depends on, if title screen will be included into beta3 or RC1, doesnt it?

I think he was talking about the patch and not the savegame.
yep and also the lack of question mark in the end of my sentence should have suggested that this was rhetorical question...
or as 'Zephyris' put it:
Zephyris wrote:To clear up the confusion:
I was asking whether a patch to change the way the title screen works to jump point to point, no dev has shown any interest so the answer is (for now) no.
Without this patch you just have to make a normal save game, and position the view when you save the game to the one you want to have for the title screen.
And yes, the point of this "contest" is that a save that the devs like will be included as the new background screen.

Because the noob will then think that the candy floss fields are in temperate and complain that they never get one, or that the paper mill is in temperate, or ... and also the undergrounds of those industries don't match the landscape.

With all this commotion about a new 1.0 start screen - why not just simply make it with OpenTTD 0.3.6. There were quite some good times on those servers...
Or better - there has been a patch in that good old first integrated build r2424i4 that showed different areas of a (save-) game/cycled the view through a running map...

Is it allowed to use time cheat?

Yes, in fact it would be advised to use the time cheat to get a good range of vehicles from different eras.

Instead of using the time cheat you can also enable the "Engines never expire" setting and just start the game in 2050.

Here's my current OpenTTD title screen.
(resolution is 1680x1050, so sorry for the big screenshot file!)
I tried to put every interesting features of the game, while keep the scenery and layout "realistic", in my sense.
- canals, rivers, aqueducts
- different types of railroads
(..and two express mainline constructions)
- a big city with local bus and cargo network
- actually running cargo network
(...which can show us both loaded/unloaded sprites of trucks)
The only thiing that I missed is probably a streetcar, however I think there is no need to place streetcar:
if any streetcar is available in the game without newgrf, then it is one of the *feature* of original OpenTTD.
Title game would be most general introduction for OpenTTD for any users, possibly including users not interested in using newgrf...
And. of course, this game is only for title screen. I tried to be "realistic", but outside of the possible viewable area is a full of unrealistic layouts. I also used cheats and non-sense vehicle orders to simulate busy transport networks.
...But it would not be a problem, right?
Anyway, I hope this title screen looks nice to you!

You are using GRFs. It may be nice, but it can't be used.

Um, I didn't: I removed every newGRFs from the game. I checked it again.
If i was allowed to put somg GRFs in the title screen, I weren't care about the streetcars...
Maybe the screenshot based on OpenGFX looks weird to you?

OpenTTD 0.3.6 doesn't have all the new, great, features that 1.0 has.

I may post my own admission.
I welcome all criticism.
Note: This game is just faked.

@ Chelsona
There is one problem with that great title scen - what with smaller resolutions? In 640x480 user can watch only bunch of canals and bridhes.
@FHS Too many open area with absolutely nothing and long straight tracks. And airport is too big for that small town.

Well done Chelsona! It looks very nice, especially with the OpenGFX.
FHS: I think this one is a little too empty. The main problem is that the interesting stuff is in the middle, and is therefore hidden by the menu. You should move the screen a little to the left and up, so it is centered just over the airport. This will allow to display the town, the large monorail station, and the airport.
Also something to think about: what makes the screen "alive" is its complexity. In the original screen, you can clearly see that there are ships everywhere, tunnels coming in and out of tunnels, turning all over the place. Your rails are only straight, therefore less interesting than one containing bridges, turns etc.

And why both scenes are almost flat?
