I've only just got around to posting, but I successfully made it back to Peterborough.
When it comes to Manchester Piccadilly, my train arrived in, on time at 10:09 and by 10:13 I was on the platform just as the train I was getting on (10:20) was pulling in. Good times.
I eventually made it back to Peterborough 8 minutes later however, because our train was held up as it passed through Grantham by a late running train in front.

Best bit was on the Transpennine between Manchester Piccadilly and Doncaster. I got a table, so I just plugged in my laptop and watched an episode of Supernatural. Good times.

I know at uni I'll be coming home once every 3-4 weeks for a weekend or so. I just love too many people here and can't leave properly. Looking forward to just slumping back in a XC Turbostar for 2h45, plugging in a Macbook and watching a few films

I suspect you are very short then as the slumping room on an XC 170 is minimal, as for watching a film, I doubt you will find much room for a seat let alone to get your laptop out.

The XC 170's are available to reserve a seat, so that is what I assume Jamie will do.

I'm quite short so I've never been hindered by complaints that seats are too narrow/no legroom etc. In fact I got unnerved on the ex-Southern 319s which contain enough legroom to comfortably put a table in front of you, and that's an Airline seat! I've even tried the FGW High-Density sets which I find comfortable enough to fall asleep in by the time we're passing Ealing Broadway. The comfiest seats IMO (but this is related to my body size) are the Penolinos, and the mixed-use First/Standard seats in Virgin's refreshed Voyagers (they seem slightly deep-sprung when you first settle into them).

They have sockets on the Turbostars? Don't remember ever seeing any on the ScotRail ones, at least!

I think CrossCountry have retrofitted them in - I'll have a check
Edit: yep they do ^_^
I had a ridiculously short ride in one from University to Birmingham New Street (for some reason actually SLOWER than the 323s which make an intermediate stop...) and I didn't notice them - but then I wasn't explicitly looking for them. Nice interior though - better than the previous Central Trains one.

Due to timetable slack - it gives the BNS signalman a chance to sort out any errors.
The train will probably be scheduled have a five minute (plus) stay at New Street. If a platform is taken, then it'll arrive late and depart on time.
323s generally don't have this problem because they're scheduled so often. Just how it is, I suppose.
