Sadly not as I only read your post after I'd started work on populating the map.

I'll add a sign saying "orudge's house, 20m north" or something! ;)

Actually, I have a better idea.... ;)

Orkney Islands and the top of scotland

Image
Orkney Islands on their own.

Both make pretty good island maps, imo! Should be easy to put the correct towns on them too.

Again, these are free to use, just credit me if you use them for a scenario you release please.

Both maps are in 1024x1024 size.

Ooooh... nice! Somewhat nicer than my Orkney scenario (which was made in the days before automated map converters and whatnot). Cheers. ;)

Also, Orkney tends not to be snowy, except in February if one is lucky.

Oh, there's my stereotypical view of north scotland gone then! ;)

Sorry.

The map with scotland on it does look nice though in the snow! lol

I think these maps will make for some very good island oriented scenarios though, the islands are large enough to support large towns and the waterways being large enough in parts to present problems to cross without expensive bridges.

A good one for fans of shipping!

I may well have a crack at it later on. I'll add the towns in and repost it back up again.

Yes, if the map is 1024x1024, then it would certainly offer more scope than my old 256x256 TTD scenario.

If you need help with the towns, then let me know. Alternatively, post whatever you figure out, and I can offer corrections if need be. ;)

Very good map, better than mine, anyways.

Just a few critiques though, but you can ignore them at your peril! :P

1. Though I like the inclusion of the smaller towns, especially the funnily named ones, there's some pretty big places in the gaps in Powys and General Midlands area (Warwick/Worcester/Oxfordshire/Northants) that need filling. Suggestions include;

Powys - Llandrindod Wells, Newtown, Welshpool
Midlands - Evesham, Banbury, Bromsgrove (bigger than Redditch)

2. I realise this isn't the finished product, but eventually you'll want to make sure that the coastline is right. Weymouth looks to have an island rather than Portland Bill; similarly the Wirral has a gaping hole where Birkenhead should be.

3. Some places appear to be a little out of position too.

4. Additional gripes include Bridges where bridges shouldn't be, and nothing in Ireland and no oil rigs.

I'm a grumpy sod, aren't I?

It's a great piece of work though, and it's probably one of the most accurate UK maps I've seen about, in terms of detail.

Erm, look off the coast of north east scotland for the oil field ;)

Some towns probably are out of place, especially in the middle of the map, its easy near coast lines as you can judge where to put them, but unless you can overlay a heightmap with long and lat positions of the towns, its very hard to do.

That said, if anyone has a list of long and lats for the major towns & cities in the UK, I may well be able to do it.

I would go searching, but as I'm a crafty beggar, I have a holiday to Spain up my sleeve. That way, I can meander into the shadows for a bit, come back and nobody will know I was gone...

LOL, I know what you mean. I have a feeling the towns on the orkney map will have more people in them than in real life! lol ;)

Well, there are perhaps three towns with more than 1000 people living in them, as far as I can remember. Plus many assorted settlements with others. :P

Either way, instead of having a town called "Sanday", a town called "Eday", etc, I personally would suggest you split those up into the smaller settlements - eg, on Sanday, you have the likes of Kettletoft, Lady Village, Burness, amongst others. Spaces things out a bit better and is a bit more realistic. ;)

Well, that's currently what I've got for a certain island! ;)

Hmm, interesting, single houses have become towns there (eg, Newark, Newbigging, etc). The primary settlements on Sanday are really, as stated, Burness, Kettletoft, Stove / the "South End", Lady Village, the "North End". But ah well, I shalln't be too picky, heh. One has to sacrifice some reality for gameplay, I guess. ;)

Its the difficulty with going off Multimap.co.uk, you don't know which are towns and which are single houses.
