And do you really want to waste vehicle slots (and CPU time) for these "pedestrian vehicles"? Not to mention the extra code...

As I program simutrans which does it (not taking much CPU time anyway, since these car drive forward until a crossing and then just take a random direction) I am not the right one to ask this.

We have a switch to turn it off, but the cars does not affect the CPU usage at all. The pedestrians, if in big amount could take about 1-2% CPU usage (especially, since they are also spawned upon arrival at stations).
