In theory yes you can add sounds, but nobody has actually done it. I think Patchman would work with you if you seriously wanted to try it.

No, you can't add sounds. You could possibly replace some, but even that is complicated.

And what about not adding a sound, but using an existing one? to make the cows tile "sound" when it's in the screen, as the farm does.
The problem is that if you have a map with too many cows, probabily you willl throw the computer from the window after 1 minute... maybe it's better without sound, actually

Wait a minute, I thought there was a discussion about this once before, and the consensus was that you could
a.) replace sounds
b.) make more sounds, by fiddling with the indices (requiring Patch work)
c.) make things cause sounds that didn't before, by using the event handlers

Has further research discovered more limitations?

Well, my experiments were with the DOS version, where the sounds seem to be hard-coded into not just TTD, but the external sound driver (sound.com) as well. It should be possible to edit the sounds data file, but only to replace existing sounds via a grfcodec-like mechanism.

Do you know by any chance if the Windows one works the same way? I bet not.

Probably not, but I only play the DOS version personally, so that's what matters to me.

Oh, so we'd need a Windows-playing Patch person to fix this one. Well, it's just ear candy anyway, we can do without it I suppose. It would have been fun to add specific sounds for specific trains though.
