Almost anywhere you like. You should better not unzip nightly over a release, because savegames are not fully compatible (with nightlies you can load both, but with releases you can't load sg of nightlies).
C:\Program files\ottd-nightly or so will be a good location. Don't forget to copy you original TTD files over.

You grab the nightly, unzip it somewhere, copy the required data files from TTD, and then follow the steps from Mchl's guide.

please find attacted, a picture contain 3 version of OTTD running at once.

I've circled how you know what version your running on a Windows OS

OTTD 0.5.3 = stable realase
ChrisIN r11060 = ChrisIN build
OTTD r11129 = Nightly Build

Edit, to make thing simple.

make a copy of your OTTD folder, name it something else, so you don't get confused.

and download a nightly, link given before, and extract the files into your copied folder, over writing all the exsisting files

and then use OTTD.exe in that folder, and you will be running a nightly build

bazel14, if you are still using your desktop link, change the target of it accordingly.

your clearly not doing somthing then, can you please tell us what your doing step by step ?

you should be doing this.

lets start from the top

1. installing OTTD 0.5.3
2. Making a copy of this floder, normally found in Program files on a windows OS
3 Downloading a nightly build from here (Win 32 for most windows OS).
4. extracting these downloaded files into the copied OTTD 0.5.3 folder, over writing all files.

this will then give you a running nightly build

If you've installed a nightly and you're running the correct .exe file, it's almost impossible that it still shows you a release build number. (There's exactly one chance: the developers compiled a release build and offer it as a nightly  )

I've updated Mchl's users manual for 32 bpp from the previous page in this thread to the current state of affairs, and added it to the wiki http://wiki.openttd.org/index.php/32bit ... evelopment

It's a wiki, so feel free to modify anything that's not correct, clear, etc
