Yes, with mine, the bigger your screen is, the more you get :) (wonder what the average OpenTTD'ers screen size is?)

So here is an updated version, with water included from sizes 1024x768 up.

This replaces the post 2 posts above.

Submissions for the title game competition is now closed.

We'll now hold two consecutive rounds of votes: the first will create a shortlist of three and the 2nd then will put the three top ranking games to a final vote.

First round of votes:
  • Each person lists his or her personal 1st, 2nd and 3rd ranked game - which will be worth three, two and one point respectively:
    1. place: XY
    2. place: AB
    3. place: NM
Please use the name of the entry as written above the screenshots (which corresponds to the forum nick here)
  • Votes are either sent to me preferentially via forum mail to my account. Alternatively you can send an e-mail to planetmaker@openttd.org with the title "Titlegame competition Round 1".
  • One person one vote, do not send multiple votes. If detected, that person's votes will be discared and if s/he submitted an entry the entry disqualified.
  • Voting is open till end of February, thus 29. February 23:59:59 UTC time.
As a side-note, we can make some interesting statistics on what AIs are used as at least 1/3 has a game started with one ;-). If one of the savegames with a dead AI wins we will try to edit these dependencies out of the savegame:

Sorry, I somehow only saw this now... :-(

Yes, you can vote for yourself.

I don't see any posting from you from 6th February, though. I'm afraid that I thus missed your update. That's the reason I asked to make a new posting for updates so that I do not miss them. Anyway. The screens will be updated shortly.

So, finally round 1 of the competition is closed and we got a shortlist for the 2nd and final round of your annual titlegame competition.

First of all let me say that I'm this year really impressed with the quality of submissions in general and it was truely a hard decision:

We have three leading savegames:
  • sc79 with a total of 32 points
  • Bluescreen with a total of 28 points
  • Mark with a total of 27 points
It is followed by a list of other excellent savegames which couldn't make it all into this final round. See complete ranking here and a complete list of all votes so that you can check that I didn't miscount your vote.

In this final round of votes every person has exactly one vote. The game with most votes wins and will become the title game for the OpenTTD 1.2.x series.

Votes are cast like in the previous round either by forum mail to me or by sending an e-mail to me which list exactly one entry. Voting for this final round is open till March 12 2012, 23:59:59 UTC.

The three savegames with the highest score made it into this final round; for easy watching in the browser use one of the links be low. For easy watching 'at home' you can download all the savegames (296KiB zip) or all the savegames and screenshots (57MiB zip).

See the titlescreen page for links to screenshots in all sizes.

Heh, those results can only mean that this was the last my participation in the Title Game Competitions. Anyway, my entry is still a winner for me, so I'll use it as a Title Game for myself...

If I've got into to the finals and then didn't win, then it would be OK/fine for me. But I've only got three votes!!! (what the hell with you people??? No, offense to anyone. But I can't really understand - the choosing method for the winners), the last time I'd six entries and lame ones (IMHO) got more votes (and much more then I've got in this competition) then the good ones (IMHO). I've used my special method to find the winner: I've looked through the first three resolutions (600*480 - 1024*768, the higher resolutions mostly will give the same points, so there isn't point to view them) and counted things - vehicles/track/rail/airport type (one point for each (8 points max): usual rail/electric, monorail, maglev, bus/truck, ferryboat/cargo ship/oil ship, small aircraft & big aircraft & chopper) and so on, which could gave some points if they were visible in this resolution. Title games with the huge cities always got minus "visuality" points and train/bus/plain crashes just eliminate them for good (the same went for the entries that were without water on those resolutions). My list was like this (I've made it before the last update+some new entries - but the final result was the same anyway):
640*480 + 800*600 + 1024*768/ total points
Entry 1) Damned1: 4+5+6 / total 15 points
2) Frank327: 1+3+3/ 7 points (nothing to see here)
3) Janos_paszto: 6+6+7/ 19 points - ** (one star for entries with 5 points, two for 6, three for 7 and four for 8 points - for the first resolution) - Total place - 3 (special points for visual appearance).
4) Johavnes: 1+1+1/ 3 points (nothing to see here)
5) kvm: 5+6+7/ 17 points - *
6) level_crossing: 6+6+7/19 points - ** Total place - 1 (for me it could be very impolite to vote for myself)
7) Mark: 4+6+7/ 17 points
8-Eight) Mickael: 7+7+7/ 21 points - *** No place for him (it could be the third place), because he has some bus crashes there, in the final update he fixed that, but still he was eliminated...
9) Nicfer: 6+6+6/ 18 points - **
10) ODM: 4+4+5/ 13 points
11) plasma_wolf: 6+6+6/ 18 points - ** - Total place 2 (nice work)
12) Pottanda: 5+5+6/ 16 points - *
13) RAMMAR: 7+7+8/ 22 points - *** (but still I wanted to use my judgment way for myself - it's very busy here and it's very complicated (a little minus, but still interesting), even there are not so many sounds, "visuality" and action is very high on any resolution. It shows almost everything that it can show)...
14) sc79: 6+6+7/ 19 points - ** No place - eliminated (a special and forceful train crash) (possible place - First place - a lots of points for the "visuality").
15) schroduck: 5+5+6/16 points - *
16) sylf: 2+2+4/8 points (nothing to see here)
17) wanderdog: 5+5+7/17 points - *
18) xifoideus: 4+6+7/17 points
19) yoshi: 5+5+6/16 points - *
Of course there were other things that were making my decisions (when I've chosen the winners I've used saves to make the final trio and their places)...

No offense to anyone, because it's only my opinion and I just wanted to runt about it all.

Oh, that's sad to hear :-( Personally I think your entry has a very unique style which is quite an enrichment to this competition.

RAMMAR wrote:But I can't really understand - the choosing method for the winners
I can only speak for myself, but:
First I looked at the small res screens, and made a somewhat subjective ranking based on overall looks and how many different features of the game are shown. Then I checked the screens in larger res. If they still were interesting to look at, they stayed in said ranking. If not, they were removed. The top three got my votes.
So the my ranking is solely based on the small res screens, for the reason that a title must look good in that as well.

What made me not pick yours, if you're interested:
- There was too much airport in small res, nearly half the screen.
- Too many bridges overall.
Quite a unique style indeed, and that may very well be the reason of the small amount of votes you got: I think people look for their own playing style in the titles they choose. And there's simply not a lot of people with the same style of playing as yours!

But I hope you at least had fun making your title game, that's more important than what others think of it!

Then you have used the my way to define the winner trio. 640*480 was the main resolution for me too. As for the bridges, I wanted to show the diffent types of them, colours, the way to use them and how you can build them (there is a special construction way to have a start/lifting side of the bridge under another one that is two tiles above, there some another examples as bridges over the city roads and the bridges above the train lines/bus/truck roads that have the same direction as that bridge and so on). As for the big airport, I couldn't place a small there, because of the fact that it won't have the catchment area to have the nearest city in it. Also it was used completely - choppers and planes were using it from the two sides, so the small part of it could spoil the whole picture...

As for the fun, yes I'd it. There is one of the reasons why it was a final my participation, because I've used all of my ideas that I'd in my mind and I wanted to share them with you guys and girls...

As for my style to build things, you can look into my old saves (as one archive with 8 saves - about 62MB in size) (OTTD version somewhere about 0.7.5)... (this is Russian site, I'd to use it because of the dead Megaupload (Dead because of the SOPA & ACTA, I hate it) - the slow/free way to download is on the left, the right is the fast and will cost you money)

I did not look at any screenshots, but looked at the savegames. (Btw. everyone who did not look at the savegames missed the easter egg in one of the submissions ^^ )

About my reasoning for the voting: I first narrowed down the choices between savegames. The first round lead me to 5 savegames, plus RAMMAR's. I noted it separately to the other games as it was completely different from all other games. My first thought was, there is no way to put this game between the others; either I have to vote 0 or 3 points.
The game itself looks like 3 Z levels of transportation above each other all over the place, and I am sure it took quite some time to construct/design the winding tracks within each other.

However, in the end I decided that the game is just too massive and would come as a shock when starting OTTD. However, I also think that it should be put under the screenshot section on the OTTD website. It's quite a special masterpiece, but not for the TitleGame.

I've thought about that idea (I think that planetmaker could arrange that, if he isn't against it, because some screenshots from this save could be a good example of the future and busy world) and that would be a good alternative to a winning in this competition...

To be honest:
No offence RAMMAR, but your savegame as a submission for a title game looks like a joke to me. There is just some stuff absolutely everywhere and the total composition of the "image" thus gets rather messy. A title savegame probably is not made to have stuff everywhere, especially in this "rather random" way, and majority of people probably wont like it either due to that reason.

Cluster madness of rails is nice to build, but probably too difficult to look at, especially if it is rather random without any real system. Just visually, your titlegame is in my opinion just inappropriate due to being totally filled over the top. So perhaps consider that before reacting to your "loss" the way you do.

Oh, I'm totally for that idea and your savegame definitely has good place in that gallery.

It's somewhere on my too long to-do or nice-to-do list and I didn't announce that as I'm currently somewhat short on time (a few RL deadlines ahead) and didn't want to have a crowd of people waiting and ask "when will it be up" on a daily basis :-P

Since it's become a bit of a discussion, I'll explain my reasoning:

I was looking at the screenshots and I started with the smallest resolution. The ones which had least to show, went out immediately. Then I moved up one resolution and did the same thing again. Places which had lots of railways closely together (sc72 is the best example of that) went out quite quickly as well. Eventually I ended up with three canditates and made my order in that.

Considering the possible outcome of the competition, how do you put up another game in your title screen? is there a quick link on how to do that, or a specific path in the directory+folder system anyone could mention straight away?

Rename a savegame to opntitle.dat and place it in your /baseset folder in the installation directory.

[EDIT]It should have been the /baseset folder. Thnx RAMMAR for spotting, I use the AutoUpdater so the old folders never got removed because it just unzips the download.
