i haven't spent much time with this, but isn't that the perfect place to use cases?

Hm... have spent some more time on it, and i think to properly use cases, one has to restructure the string building tree, because the string containing the string-inducing preposition must be the outer string.

Code: Select all

STR_ORDER_SERVICE_AT                                            :Falls nötig, Wartung {STRING.in}
STR_ORDER_SERVICE_NON_STOP_AT                                   :Fahre ohne Halt Zwecks Wartung {STRING.zu}
STR_GO_TO_DEPOT.in [right syntax?]                              :{G 2 "im" "in der" "im" "in den"} {2:STRING} {1:TOWN}
STR_GO_TO_DEPOT.zu                                              :{G 2 "zum" "zur" "zum" "zu den"} {2:STRING} {1:TOWN}
[other string analogue]

not sure if that is feasible, might affect more strings than that, and the restructuring would have to be done in all languages and the source code

What about just making the two lines of text a bit more similar:

either

Code: Select all

or

Code: Select all

Drawback: We'd lose the hint "falls nötig" that explains a bit what the 'service' flag actually does, at the first string (the second one already misses that hint). However, the english string doesn't have any hint like that either, it just says "service" instead of "go to", not explaining that this means it will skip the order if the vehicle does not need service.

Hmm, I just came up with another wording that would reintroduce that hint:

Code: Select all

(or in instead of zu, if you think that's better wording...)

I prefer actually Roujin's last proposal. It doesn't require large scale restructuring, it makes strings more uniform and doesn't pose any information loss (the "falls nötig" is IMO a vital piece of information in order to avoid questions from beginners).

Maybe "Fahre, falls nötig, (ohne Halt) zur Wartung ...".

Maybe rather:

STR_VEHICLE_DETAILS_INCREASE_SERVICING_INTERVAL_TOOLTIP and DECREASE says "Tage", although the interval is in either days or percents. I don't think "Tage" means percents (but that's my very limited knowledge of German).

It means days. Percents: Prozent.

Right. Thanks for the report, I just corrected it.
Didn't think about that when I changed those strings yesterday.

Apparantly the translating 'HP' to 'PS' is incorrect, see http://bugs.openttd.org/3280
Should become something like 'BHP' or so, right? At least then the abbreviation is correct again.

IMO it's an invalid objection (see details there). No person will expect or understand a power unit to be in different units than either PS or kW. At best it needs clearification which horse power is meant. And then for all practical purposes the "metric horse power" should be chosen, rendering this problem obsolete.

Hello

Ok, there is a difference between BHP (745.7W) and the german HP "PS" (735.5W) but I think this would be a bit nitpicking. This is a game (not reality :mrgreen: ) and IMHO nobody will say "Wohoo, I calulated it and it's wrong. Shame on you!". Leave this as it is.

there are certain people who have complained about the mph to km/h conversion was off when it was set to factor 1.6 (which would have given the trains in the DBSet sensible values like 100km/h or 60km/h instead of 99km/h and 59km/h...) of course these people are also for nitpicking the hp to kW conversion, and i vote to not listen to them like we should have done that last time...

In r18444, rubidium committed a new feature for translations, after a bugreport (#3335) from a greek user/translator. I think the same applies to the german translation. I'm talking about the STR_NEWS_INDUSTRY_CLOSURE_* strings. For "Ölquellen" and "Colaquellen" in toyland, they should use the plural form, which could afaik not be done before, but can be done with this commit.
Currently, it says something like

Code: Select all

XY Kohlebergwerk gibt bevorstehende Schließung bekannt.
YX Ölquellen gibt bevorstehende Schließung bekannt.
Now, if I understand the feature correctly, it's possible to change it depending on gender to something like

Code: Select all

XY Kohlebergwerk gibt...
YX Ölquellen geben...
I don't have much time at the moment, so I'd be glad if someone else could investigate how exactly this new feature works and apply it. :)

Maybe there are other places where this can be used, I think we had a discussion before in this thread where this feature would have been needed to do it correctly. Maybe it was exactly these STR_NEWS_INDUSTRY_CLOSURE_* strings though...

---
PS: now that I reread the commit and think about it, I realize that this would have been possible already without this commit.
If I understand it correctly now, the commit is useful in cases where something has to change in a place in the sentence other then after the substring whose gender is in question (and before the next substring).

That means that for STR_NEWS_INDUSTRY_CLOSURE_GENERAL (which is the only one used for oil and cola wells afaik), it would have been possible before to make it correct. For STR_NEWS_INDUSTRY_CLOSURE_SUPPLY_PROBLEMS and STR_NEWS_INDUSTRY_CLOSURE_LACK_OF_TREES, the new feature is required to make it correct, but these are (for the default industries) correct anyway.
Going to do the change now myself. edit: done. changed a total of six strings in STR_NEWS_INDUSTRY_*. Please someone doublecheck if I made any mistakes, if possible...

Well, if you notice any other places where changing something in the sentence before the substring that defines the gender, you can change it now.

---
edit, much later: Apparently, I did something wrong, as rubidium fixed it in r18449. Sorry :(
If it's not too much of a hassle, an explanation how this feature exactly works would be nice.

Can you tell me what you consider wrong? I fail to see what you mean.

I think I found some typos in german language file.

Proposal:

Thanks for the report :-) I changed the strings accordingly, but took a modification for the base set update as the general theme is to avoid either 'Du' or 'sie' and rather take the indirect address:

Code: Select all

Maybe you care to register as translator yourself? It's easily feasable, and translations are made via a convenient web interface?
